Portable dvd player for dish setup

has anyone instead of the old days bringing a tv outside to check satellite signal while tweaking a dish on the roof, used a dvd portable tv? The ones the kids use to use in the car for long drives? If so how do you hook up to satellite receiver? and is there a specific Dvd portable player i need? I got three sitting around the house, but couldn't manage to set one up correctly.

it would have to have a video input.

I've done that before. Can be hard to see the screen on a bright day.
If I remember correctly there was a switch to go from dvd to external source.
