LAS VEGAS -- Should Floyd Mayweather Jr. prevail against fellow welterweight titleholder Marcos Maidana on Saturday night (Showtime PPV, 9 ET) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, he will put himself in a club of one.
He will become the first fighter in boxing history to simultaneously hold unified world titles in both the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Marcos Maidana Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas
When: Saturday, 9 p.m. ET
TV: Showtime PPV
He owns the WBC and WBA belts at junior middleweight and the WBC belt at welterweight. A win over Maidana would also give him the WBA welterweight title.
However, the organizations are breaking their own rules by allowing him to hold belts in multiple divisions. But what else is new with the alphabet bodies?
Although it will be a nice accomplishment, Mayweather said it doesn’t drive him.
“I love accomplishing certain things. That’s a part of my legacy, of course. But I don’t go in there saying I just want to win this belt,” he said. “I want to look impressive, I want to put on a good show and we don’t expect for this fight to go the distance. He looking for the knockout and we looking for the fight not to go the distance, so you gonna get a helluva fight Saturday, I guarantee you that.”
Mayweather also played music to my ears when he ripped the organizations for the proliferation of nonsensical interim belts, especially the WBA.
"I totally disagree with that interim belt stuff. I totally disagree,” he said. “They need to get that out of boxing. They talk about cleaning up the sport. If I'm going to be in the sport, interim belts need to be out of boxing. These guys [who hold interim titles] get thinking they are real champions. Two guys carrying the same belt in the ring and they are like 'which guy is champion?' As far as the interim belts, we need to get that out of boxing.”
