Red Bull technical guru Adrian Newey has remained coy when asked about rumors linking him with a big-money move to Ferrari in the near future.
Paddock speculation has suggested that Ferrari has offered Newey – the finest car designer in Formula 1 – a huge salary to leave four-time champions Red Bull and move to Italy. The team has been struggling in recent years with its car, and president Luca di Montezemolo is growing increasingly frustrated with the on-track displays.
In the Spanish Grand Prix today, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen came home in sixth and seventh place respectively. It also marks one year since the team last won a race, which is its longest drought since 1994.
So would Newey really leave Red Bull and take up the challenge of reviving Ferrari’s fortunes?
“There’s always rumors, isn’t there?” he told Sky Sports. “What can I say? It’s the silly season.
“We’re all under contract, so at some point I’ve got to think about the future, but my focus at the moment is trying to get back on top of those silver cars.”
Christian Horner also spoke to a number of media outlets, and was certain that Newey would remain with the team. However, should Ferrari put enough money on the table, it would take a lot for the aerodynamicist to turn down the most famous team in the sport.
For now though, it’s nothing but a rumor. F1′s silly season has a habit of rearing its head over the summer, but it appears to have come into force a bit earlier this year. Fernando Alonso has even been linked with a move to Mercedes across the course of the weekend, but all parties have rejected this notion when asked.
Nevertheless, Ferrari might see Newey as the man who could finally deliver a car that will take Alonso to his third world championship.
