Access Point

I have an AT&T U-verse modem&/router and the guy on the store said if I buy

one of those access point device plug in on one of the port it will make the signal stronger.

I was just wondering because my computer is like between 10-12 feet away from that U-verse gizmo

and the signal is not even excellent! With that access point will it really make the signal stronger?
