Hello,

(A Brownie troop recently found me wandering, lost, in the desert. That's why I haven't posted for a long while. Honest.)

I recently picked up a second SV8000HD and an unprogrammed WIZ110SR dongle.
I'm wondering if anyone knows how the original iHub/Svlan dongle got its power from the SV8000 serial port with no need for an external supply.

Thanx.

PS - I did find this (http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/rspower.html)on epanorama but it has so many squiggly and arrowy things!

The nine pin connector on FTA boxes often only use 3 of the pins for serial comms--TX, RX and ground. So, some FTA box makers started using the unused 6 pins for other things--sometimes you find a second serial port supported on the connector for debug uses, and sometimes they put power on the pins. I suspect if you got a multimeter and put it on the port you would find something like the last.

To answer your question ... Original SVLAN gets power from pin # 4 on the RS232 connector of the sonicview receiver. If you are trying to power the Wiz110sr however things will be a little different as you will be passing through a null modem adapter or cable.

Here is a picture with jumper wire on the Wiz110SR used to supply power from the receiver to the dongle via Null Modem.

i helped a friend with the same problem i did the mode shown on the above pic but it did not work with the db9 cable he was using for the ihub he had to by a Mini DB9 Female to Female Null Modem Adapter on ebay he connected that adapter to the cable he was using on the ihub and his wiz110sr powered right up

Hmm. Don' t you just need the adapter and connect the wiz with the adapter to db9 of sv,,, you do not need the null cable right?

You can use a null modem adapter or a null modem cable. The reason the cable did not work for the above post is he used a straight through pin to pin DB9 cable therefore all the cable was doing was acting as an extension. Null modem cables crosses certain pins from one end to the other.
