The 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been struck by tragedy following the death of a 54-year-old motorcycle racer this afternoon.

Bobby Goodin, a resident of Flower Mound, Texas, has passed away after sustaining injuries when he crashed his Triumph Daytona 675R just seconds after he completed his run this morning.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that Goodin lost control of the bike while trying to slow down in a gravel parking lot atop Pikes Peak.

The bike ended up going airborne and Goodin landed on a nearby area of rocks. EMTs found him face down and unconscious, then gave him continuous CPR until he was taken away from the summit by a Flight for Life helicopter to Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs.

Per the Gazette, Flight for Life left the summit an hour after the crash, and the Hill Climb was delayed by more than an hour and a half. Then, early this evening, the El Paso County (Colo.) Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Goodin had died.

He is the first motorcycle rider to die in the PPIHC since Bill Gross in 1982.

“It sucks the joy right out of it,” competitor Dan Elders told the Gazette. “They’re our compatriots. We all love the same thing.

“When you lose someone, it hurts.”

Goodin was competing in his second PPIHC after finishing third in the 1250 Pro Class in his first appearance last year.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time.
