1990 K1500 5.7 TBI.

I just finished installing my new motor. I took her for a test drive around the block and noticed that my oil pressure gauge is is really high.
I mean as I drive it shows 400Kpa. In idle it drops down to the halfway mark giver take. I ran the truck at idle and popped off the oil filler and there is oil spitting out inside the valve covers so I know its getting oil.
The Oil pump is brand new, came with the new motor.

Is this a normal thing for new installed motors? Perhaps I need to break in the motor? Perhaps I forgot to hook something up?

Thx for any advice.

is this a 'crate motor" ? and it is the oil form the factory or is it oil you put in ?
you can check it with a another gauge to see it the gauge is not reading right. Also it may change after the 500 oil change

I think it is a rebuilt motor.
I had to send my old motor back for core.
It is the same stock motor just very clean and new looking.

Came in a crate though.

Oil is 5w30, Plane Jane normal oil.

I am going to try and test it tonight with a oil pressure tester, if i can find someone in town that has one to lend me.

I would say your ok...It is normal to have a higher oil pressure with a new rebuilt eng.

As long as the oil drops ...when warm....can very

If it pins the gauge...and stays there....There could be a problem .

Main venerable contribute to this .

Weak gauge
Blockages
spring to strong in oil pump
cam bearing turned
and few more...Not to scare you...But very good thing to watch for.

I would say consult where you bought it from.

But I would say your ok .

Cheers

Here is what it looks like.
I was just over in the garage and I took a video of it with my Zi8
The truck has been in there for two days and its T-Shirt weather in there so the oil isn't frozen or anything.

It seems the majority of people and the research I have done indicate that I have nothing to worry about but I am no mechanic. I fix computers for a living. lol

How ever this motor replacement and all the work I have done I sure have learned a lot.

Anyhow what I am getting at is that I am kinda scared to drive my truck cause if I blow my new motor Ill feel like a dumb ass, (I am not sure if ya can blow a motor with High oil pressure?)

Anyhow, Watch the video and if you still feel I am good to go then Ill go for a burn.

Thx guys, I really appreciate the help.

Drive it a few days but watch the oil pressure to make sure it doesn’t drop all of a sudden, it is normal for a new motor to have high oil pressure as the bearings and seals are tight and new, it may drop a bit but this is nothing to worry about. Also watch the water temp that it doesn’t get higher than normal, this would be an indication of an oil passage being plugged. (Thus the high oil pressure)

Some questions, did you replace the oil pressure sensor?
Or is it the original?
Is the oil pump a stock or an after market one?

P. S.

I have an 85 Chevy Blazer with a 5.7 in it, it still has over 45 PSI (310 Kpa) of oil pressure and its got over 265,000 miles on it.

The oil pressure do hickey is the original.
I took the truck for a drive. The temp got up a good bit but then dropped suddenly which is prolly because the thermostat opened up.

It seems like everything is fine.

Thanks guys for all the help. I really had a great time with this project.

PS: Not sure if the oil pump is after market. It was tie strapped to one of the push rods.
It looks identical to the one on my old motor.

Hi, this may helph ?
400KPA = 58.1. PSI. specifications are-10psi (68.95 KPA ) @ 500RPM
and from 30PSI (206.84 KPA) to 55PSI (379 KPA) @2000RPM.

go down to your local parts store and get a low cost mechanical oil pressure gauge. not a Electronic. tell us the pressure after you have that installed. also it's normal to have hi pressure with a rebuild.all the bearings are tight . you can also try a brake-in oil to help seat the bearings

That is only ~58 Psi which I would not think to be out of range. Less up not forget that a lot of the newer (rebuilt) motors are based on not being to worried about head/valves springs/windage trays that closing off some of the ports will actually increase the pressure.

Hopefully you will get a mechanical guage and let us know...tks

#1 of what I know of this places that sell you an engine having your engine as a core, they re built the engine and they use Melling Oil Pumps, this brand of oil pumps are know because they make high volume oil pumps, when I re built my Grand Prix 90' I bought melling oil pump and that is what happened to me gauge but I did something I know you didn't, the oil pressure sending unit I bought a new one for the re built engine, the previous sending unit had hard dry oil build up so it was going to fail soon, I bought a new pressure sending unit, also before I test drive any engine that I re built I used a mechanical OIL pressure gauge, Auto Meter brand (you can have any brand) with a copper tubing and write down the pressure at cold start and when the engine reaches the normal temp also write down the pressure reading. in 3.1L chevy engine (the one Pontiac Grand Prix came with) the normal Temp is 225 F. I then remove the oil pressure gauge and then install the factory electric sending unit and take the car for the test drive and compare the oil pressure readings, after 500 hundred miles I change the oil, that is brake IN oil and have new oil and oil filter, from here change the oil every 3 thousand or manufacturer specs............................................. .
what I am saying is install a new oil pressure sending unit and you are fine............................
