View Full Version : New WINMAX 1T firmware on Openbox X5
Beware!
Just bought a new Openbox X5 and it has this new firmware on it that (1) is a real pain in the ass to setup, (2) doesn't work, and (3) cannot be upgraded.
If anybody has one of these receivers and got it to work please post. Thanks.

Ok so what don't work, I have an X5 and it works fine, and yes it can be upgraded or downgraded.
Does your X5 have WINMAX 1T firmware?

I have X5's that work great. This is a different version of the X5 firmware. The box looks exactly like my other X5's. It can be upgraded with WINMAX bins but not with any other.

I think it can be updated to another bin, have you tried the recovery method with the newest bin file.
Yes I have tried that. Unlike other X5's where you put the bin file in the "recovery" folder with this firmware you have to rename it "rom.bin" and place it in the root. It works but I get a message that says "Check Error, Try Again" if I try the recovery bin or any bin other than the WINMAX bin.

Ok so try the loader & loader cable, use an allchunk file from one of your other X5 receivers.

That's something I've never done and it sounds like a last resort. This firmware has been around since May and I was hoping that somebody with more knowledge and experience than I had already come up with a solution that works.

What is so bad about the firmware that came with the receiver, most of the time what I find wrong with new firmware is I don't know how to use it but once I learn how it not bad.
Besides not working it is a pain to setup.
1. All cccam data must be entered manually with remote. cccam data cannot be saved.
2. TP and channel lists must be scanned and/or entered and editied manually with remote. They cannot be saved.
At this point I would be happy if I could just get it to work at all. People on other forums are having the same problem.
Worst of all is that the X5 is my favorite receiver but now I am afraid to buy one anywhere. Everything about this one is identical to my other X5's, including the remote and the box it comes in. The only difference is a little sticker on the box that says "Serial No." on a regular x5 whereas this model says "Artpo No.".
Tried loader and RS232 cable and that failed as well. Connects to box successfully but fails on Configure RAM.

Try this, download the newest openbox file in the file section.
re name it KD_P9000E_HD.bin then drag and drop into the recovery folder, now open the recovery folder and left click on
the file 1 time then right click and go down to properties and left click then un check Archive and check Read Only then apply.
then try recovery.

You don't understand. This is completely different software by a different manufacturer, Artpo.
The normal USB recovery method you describe does not work. The USB recovery method for this software requires the file to be in the root directory and the file name must be changed to "rom.bin", otherwise you get an error message that says "Unable Open File". I tried making file Read Only but it didn't help.
If you use a bin made by the new manufacturer Artpo the USB recovery method works fine.

Yes I did. Exact same results. As I said it works fine with WINMAX bin. Even using a loader and rs232 cable it works with WINMAX bin but not with any other x5 bin. There is some kind of protection built into the box that prevents using anything other than a WINMAX bin.

Well thats bad, to have a new receiver and cant use it.
If I had one I would find a way to change the firmware.

It would have to be either a hardware solution or a hack of the WINMAX bin.
I wonder if this isn't the source of the problems people are reporting as having with "cloned" x5's, the cloned receivers being these x5's manufactured by Artpo that have software that doesn't work so they are being hacked with genuine x5 software in order to sell them?
