On Monday, Manny Pacquiao will appear at a news conference at The Venetian in Macau, the first stop on a promotional junket that ends Sept. 4 in New York. The tour is designed to promote his Nov. 22 bout on HBO Pay-Per-View for the WBO welterweight title against Chris Algieri at The Venetian's Cotai Arena.
The trip will cover 27,273 miles and will include stops in Macau and Shanghai, as well as San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
It will be, as these things often are, a celebration of Pacquiao.
Pacquiao will need to prove his continued relevance, particularly since Algieri is largely an unknown. Unknown fighters tend to result in low pay-per-view sales, and while the full measure of success for the Pacquiao-Algieri show won't be determined by pay-per-view sales, it is still a huge factor.
Pacquiao remains a God-like figure among his countrymen in the Philippine Islands, as well as among those of Filipino descent living in the U.S. and around the world.
What should scare promoters, however, is the fact that there hasn't been the kind of mania surrounding Pacquiao among non-Filipinos during his last few fights as there had been previously.
Pacquiao burst into stardom in the early part of the previous decade. But when he began his dramatic climb in 2008 through the weight classes, shooting from super featherweight through super welterweight, his popularity became enormous. He was easily the most popular fighter around the world – easily – and was second only to Floyd Mayweather in the U.S.

He still remains hugely popular, but it's not quite as manic as it once was. The opponent matters more now than ever before. And that's why the point of this trip ought to be introducing Algieri to the world rather than trotting out Pacquiao for photo ops and to allow him to bask in the glow of a cheering crowd.
Algieri is a fascinating man to speak with and a quality boxer. As a heavy underdog on June 14 in the New York borough of Brooklyn, Algieri upset hard-hitting Ruslan Provodnikov to win the WBO super lightweight belt.

Algieri has two college degrees and dreams of being a doctor. He's a good-looking guy with an easy-going nature, who speaks well and has a natural charisma that endears people to him. He should be popular.
But as the tour embarks, he's not. He's largely unknown. There is a large majority of fans who aren't necessarily boxing fans, but who know fighters like Pacquiao and Mayweather and regularly buy their fights if they recognize the opponent.
It's tougher to get a pay-per-view buyer to plunk down the money when the opponent is a virtual unknown, as Algieri indisputably is.
Pacquiao's facing an unknown at a time when he needs more help than ever from the B-side to sell his fights. He started his climb in 2008 at 130 pounds, defeating Juan Manuel Marquez in an outstanding super featherweight title bout. He ended 2010 as the 154-pound champion after drubbing Antonio Margarito in one-sided fashion at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
But he hasn't scored a knockout since 2009. He's lost twice in the interim. And without the aura of invincibility or the designation as the world's most exciting fighter, he's less attractive of an option to a large segment of fans.

Pacquiao, like Algieri, is a good guy who is agreeable with the media and exceptionally charitable to his countrymen. But he's a horrible interview who says next-to-nothing of consequence. If the media doesn't have the prospect of a great fight to talk about, Pacquiao's lack of eloquence makes selling the bout tremendously more difficult. So the goal of this trip should not be for promoters to use it as a write-off to get the opportunity to stay in five-star hotels and eat at fancy restaurants. Their sole goal should be to increase Algieri's visibility and to convince a skeptical public he has a chance to win.
Pacquiao has all sorts of sessions planned with major media outlets, but none of it will matter if the tour ends and the overriding question asked by the public is, "Chris who?"

Pacquiao is without question the star of this show. But Algieri is the guy who can make the event a success or not. Convince people that he can win and that he's worth watching, and the sales will skyrocket.

But if the tour ends and the public remains skeptical, Pacquiao is looking at another dud of a pay-per-view.

Macao (AFP) - Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao on Monday dismissed his next opponent, undefeated American Chris Algieri, as merely an "okay" fighter as the build-up began to their upcoming contest.

Pacquiao (56-5-2) will put his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title on the line against 30-year-old former kickboxer Algieri (20-0) on November 23 when the Filipino icon returns for his second fight in the southern Chinese gambling haven of Macau.
Algieri seized the WBO light welterweight title in a big upset against the tough Russian Ruslan Provodnikov in a controversial split decision in June. But Pacquiao clearly does not feel his opponent can cause another shock.
"I saw his fight with Ruslan," Pacquiao told reporters at a press conference to announce the November card. "He took a lot of bad punches from Ruslan but he's tough.
"He can box. I'm not saying he's really good but he's not bad. He's okay," Pacquiao added.
Pacquiao and Algieri were in Macau for the first stop in a whirlwind six-city promotional tour that will move on to Shanghai, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York.

Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach said he had concerns about Algieri's height and reach -- he is 5ft 10in (1.77m) compared to Pacquiao's diminutive 5ft 6in -- but about little else, believing that Provodnikov had beaten the New Yorker in June.
"It surprised me because I actually think Ruslan won that fight. (Algieri) got beat up a little bit," said Roach.
"Algieri has a good reach advantage and we're going to have to get past that and his jab. That will be our biggest problem. We have ways to do that."
Pacquiao admitted the lithe, athletic Algieri would be a different prospect to the slower but durable Brandon Rios, whom 'Pac-Man' comprehensively outpointed in the same Cotai Arena venue last November.
- Tall order for Manny -

(http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/filipino-boxer-manny-pacquiao-celebrates-victory-over-timothy-photo-004958910--box.html) Manny Pacquiao will defend the WBO welterweight title against one-time kickboxer Chris Algieri on No …

"The biggest challenge for me is to fight another tall guy. I have to use my speed and footwork for this fight," said Pacquiao.
Algieri admitted he blundered in getting caught early in the fight against the Russian, but said he would learn from it.
"First round, I made a mistake," said the New Yorker. "Paid for it for the next 11-and-a-half rounds. Got a little too aggressive too early against a very dangerous guy."
Meanwhile Roach seemed a little worried by Pacquiao's many distractions out of the ring -- he is a politician and congressman, and is also embroiled in a long-running dispute with the Philippine taxman.
And now the latest extra-curricular activity is becoming player-coach for expansion team Kia Motors in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
On Sunday Pacquiao, at 35, became the oldest player to be drafted in the PBA, when Kia picked him in 11th spot.
Roach said he just had to accept the situation. But when it came to the serious end of training for the next fight, he had made a deal with the hoops-mad Pacquiao.
"We came to an agreement that four weeks before a fight he will stop playing because of injuries. We negotiated that deal a long time ago.
"He's always busy. I don't think it's a problem."
Double Olympic gold medallist Zou Shiming will take a big step along the path to becoming China's first professional boxing world champion when he fights a final eliminator for the WBO flyweight title on the undercard of the Pacquiao-Algieri fight, promoter Bob Arum announced Monday.
Zou (5-0) will fight over 12 rounds for the first time against Thailand's Kwanpichit 13 Rien Express (27-0-2), with the winner earning a February world title shot.
Also on the November 23 programme will be Ukraine's WBO featherweight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO) whose first defence of his title will be against another Thai, the highly-rated Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo who has only lost once in a 53-fight professional career.

Pacquiao 'impressed' with Algieri; Roach says he won't underestimate opponent again By Scott Christ August 25, 2014 4:44 PM

http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/LOF3joWISlxEbtuQ19tx0g--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NQ--/http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/homerun/sbnation.teamsites.vox.com/33d49ba4da2705572776e0b0108636c1
Filipino icon says that Long Island underdog "may be the smartest and fittest athlete" he's faced to date.
Manny Pacquiao will face Chris Algieri with the WBO welterweight title on the line on November 22 in Macau, China, and while the fight hasn't exactly lit up the boxing media or fan base, the 35-year-old Pacquiao said via press release that he's looking forward to the fight, and that he's not looking past the underdog.
"Chris Algieri fought an exceptional fight in June to win the world title from Ruslan Provodnikov," said Pacquiao of Algieri's WBO junior welterweight title-winning performance in his last outing.
"I am impressed and intrigued by his scientific approach to training and boxing. He may be the smartest and the fittest athlete I have ever faced and that makes him the most dangerous. I worked hard to reclaim my welterweight title and I will work harder to make sure I keep it on November 22. As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world and to bring glory to the Philippines. "
Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach was also in the corner of Provodnikov in June, and says he won't make the same mistakes in this fight that he did in that one, while also challenging Algieri to fight instead of using his legs.
"I underestimated Algieri when he faced Ruslan Provodnikov in June but I won't make that mistake again," said Roach. "I hope he understands that this is a fight and not a marathon. Algieri is going to face the best of Manny Pacquiao because Manny is going to have his toughest training camp ever. I am looking forward to a great fight and Manny's finest hour on November 22."
