This is a picture of the cap of the Kola Borehole in Russia, the deepest humans have ever drilled into Earth's crust. Remove the welded cap and you'll be staring into 12,262 meters of darkness straight down. Drop something in, and it'll be heated to 180°C (356°F) at the bottom of the hole.
