TACOMA, Wash. -- A female teacher has been shot and killed at an elementary school in Tacoma, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The shooting occurred at Birney Elementary School at 1202 S. 76th St. Friday morning.

KIRO 7 reporter Alison Grande said there were few, if any, kids on campus at the time of the shooting because it happened before school started for the day. No children were hurt.

Police said it appears that the woman arrived at the school at about 7:30 a.m. and was shot by a man who she knew. The man have been waiting for her to arrive.

KIRO 7 reporter Kevin McCarty said the shooting appears to be a domestic violence incident and the woman may have had a restraining order filed against the man.

The teacher and the man's relationship is not yet known.

Tacoma fire arrived at about 7:36 a.m. but could not revive the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, who fled the scene, was pursued by Tacoma police and Pierce County sheriff's deputies. He was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies a few blocks from the school at 166th and Canyon near a daycare and preschool.

Grande says she saw teachers hugging each other, an ambulance and yellow tape up at the scene.
