Emergency crews scoured the frigid water of the Welland Recreational Canal Sunday night searching for a car and its driver after both plunged into the
waterway.

Welland firefighters, Niagara Regional Police and paramedics were called to the scene just south of the Division Street Bridge at about 5:20 p.m.

Welland fire Chief Denys Prevost later confirmed via Twitter that the body of one person was retrieved from the canal.

The vehicle was northbound on King St. when it left the roadway, drove down an embankment and into the waterway, said deputy fire Chief Brian Kennedy.

Witnesses indicated a man was driving the vehicle when it entered the water, he said.

A light set of tire tracks could be seen running through a portion of Merritt Park.

Firefighters used lights from an aerial firetruck to light the waterway, which was covered in a thin layer of ice, and a rapid deployment craft to search for the submerged vehicle.

The NRP’s dive unit was also called to the scene.

Police divers prepared to enter the water at about 8 p.m. Soon after, the body was recovered and brought to shore.

It was too soon for police to say if the incident was an accident, or to identify the deceased.
