http://www.freedomcollection.org/news/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/freedom-of-expression.jpg
The massacre of cartoonists and publishers of Charlie Hebdo in Paris demonstrates a serious and barbaric attack on freedom of expression. I believe that everyone who values democracy and freedom is in mourning today.
This brings me to the subject of exchanging views and comments in this forum on one subject of common interest - BOXING. I have been a reader and contributor in this forum for many years. By sheer habit, I never fail to check the latest post or comment daily. It is always enjoyable to read candid remarks about a fight or about a boxer or boxers. Pictures posted often add a greater dimension to a hot topic. Quite a number of people here have become adept at "photoshopping images". By and large, most images posted have been very funny, quite satirical, and often entertaining. It is also interesting to "read" the minds of contributors through what they say, or post about their "favourite boxer(s)". And then the arguments. The back and forth comments, sometimes, factual; other times, pure speculation; a few times, quite ridiculously out in left field, add to the excitement of the forum.
But then, there is the other side of the coin.
Freedom of expression is a privilege with a serious responsibility. To "make fun" of a subject, a person, or a vision or belief, is acceptable for as long as the intent is satirical (to be funny or humorous) in a free society. To mock a person or injure a person's character is libellous (considered offensive).
Thus, we are free to make comments about a boxer, a poster, an incident, an event, whatever, BUT we have a serious responsibility to know and make sure that we do not "cross the line".
A simple rule of thumb to follow is this: "Attack the idea, opinion, outlook, etc. BUT NEVER ATTACK the person."
What is NOT ENJOYABLE here is reading comments that are injurious to another member who may not share the same passion about a boxer. It is not enjoyable to read unsubstantiated allegations or pure fantasy or idiotic remarks to hype a favourite. It is not enjoyable to read comments (or see images) that have been recycled over and over again at some sewer treatment plants.
It is enjoyable to read personal accounts or experiences about a boxing match or athlete. It is great to read about boxing styles, upcoming stars, boxers to watch, and prognostications about a hot match-up; why a boxer has a chance to win or upset his opponent. Ridiculous comments could be funny and exciting, for as long as the writer or responder is not personally attacked.
It is nice to see readers "thank" a poster or responder, and let them know they are appreciated.
It is NOT NICE to use a keyboard as a magnum or smith-wesson pointed at a poster, just because the poster's leaning (about a favourite) is not shared.
Finally, I believe that regardless of the style of writing or expression, all members of this forum deserve equal respect for being fans of the sweet science; that no one is above anyone (regardless of "honorary titles"); that we are all equally salivating at the prospect of a great boxing year 2015.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

My opinion is that we all know boxing very well... and thats good.
The cons are that some people on the forum are too biased to their favorite
fighters and hence do not accept criticism of those fighters by other posters.
Kinda turns into a shouting match that noone is going to give in to.
A lot of this is fueled by our Nationalities..we have to keep more of an open mind
and admit that sometimes our favorite fighters are not what they are all cracked up to be.
We can only take our national pride so far. Then reality has to set in.
PLUS,, my last con is that we put too much attention on Floyd vs Manny.. these are two
guys that want nothing to do with each other.. if they did they would meet in a back alley
and settle this for once and for all... (which has happened many times here in the LA area)
These two guys are much to blame for the animosity that sometimes flares up on this forum.
I myself have quit posting on the Manny and Floyd issue.. they avoid each other like I avoid
the tax man. They are pushing 40... I have no desire to watch them now. Nor any desire to
get into a forum shouting match concerning them.
Otherwise I have no issue with anyone on this forum. You guys know yer stuff.. I enjoy reading
the posts and the articles that are posted. I learn something every day on this site.
Lets all keep up the good work!

There is no doubt that so many members here are extremely knowledgeable on the subject. But knowledge about boxing is not what drives comments and posts.
In boxing, as in all other sports, it is the nationalistic fervour that brings out the passion, frenzy, and excitement to its boiling point. It explains why the Olympics, and the World Cup, or the Tour de France, as examples, are big attractions. The Jamaicans cheer for Usain Bolt. Spaniards and Brazilians are crazy about their country's soccer team. Cubans were nuts about Teofilo Stevenson. In the Philippines, crime is down to zero as criminals and military agents are glued to TV sets to watch their hero Pacquiao demolish his opponent.
Being "biased to their fighters" is not an anomaly but rather a common human psychological factor, not just in sports but in every facet of universal existence. Look at trade sanctions, immigration policies, Israeli-Palestinian conflict - it is all about protecting "nationalistic" interests.
How wonderful this world becomes if we all maintained an "open mind" and removed "nationalistic" barriers. Diplomatic missions would be a cinch. (It is all a dream, isn't it?)
But I must agree that general fans could have a totally prejudiced outlook about a boxer. But true connoisseurs of the sport must appreciate a boxer (or athlete), no matter from what country, that has incredible skills, stamina, and heart, that he/she carries into the ring, rather than being totally consumed and obnoxiously closed-minded. It is what separates the men from the boys.
And as for the Floyd-Manny spectacle (or non-spectacle), today (as they are nearing 40) or 50 years from now (if they are still around), their rivalry will write history as the greatest fight ever to be recorded, or the fight that never was. As true boxing afficionados, we are fortunate in our lifetime to have lived to see the journey of these two incredible athletes who bring the sport of boxing onto the world stage. Let us savor it for as long as we can because the existence of these two individuals at the same time in history, may never be repeated.

Kidding aside....I`m with rudee 100% in that i really have no interest at 37 and 38 yrs old do I want to see Pac and JR in a fight because no matter who the winner is will only start a new beginning of "what ifs" (they fought in their prime)that would relate into more disagreement across the board. IMO these 2 both played around just too long. We`ll never know who would have won or how.

Well put Cobra.. its pretty much "who cares" now.
Aqua, with all due respect, I don't know if it would have been as good
as it is hyped up to be.. big difference in size and weight.. plus styles
are very different.. (floyd vs manny)
I myself would prefer to see Hagler vs Hearns, Leonard vs Haglar, Arguello vs Oivares.
Gomez vs Sanchez... ect. than to see Manny and Floyd...
But then thats just me... all hindsight now..
Good post though.. enjoyed it.

If both these guys(or their managers) were true to their sport the fight would have happened no matter what the issues of the day were....truth is the whole thing took on the identity of a soap opera with so many obstacles(created or not) the fight itself took a backseat to all the proceedings around it. The fighters you mentioned wouldn`t have put up with it......they would have fought to prove to all that they were the best....PERIOD!!! End of the road for these 2 guys IMO....because no matter who wins that big "IF"(fought in their prime) would always be there thus taking a lot of the legitimacy away from the fight. It would become a spectacle.....not a fight.

Rudee, those were incredible matches. You forgot about DURAN/LEONARD; Duran vs. Davey Moore; Duran vs. Hagler!
To a certain extent I agree with you and COBRA. You express the frustration and sentiments of a thousand other fans who have been excruciatingly tantalized by the prospect of those two fighting in their prime. With the match still with no certainty of happening, (thanks to who?) it is quite understandable to draw such a pessimistic conclusion that "it no longer matters". It comes from that enormous frustration. (Imagine Mommy promising to take you to Dairy Queen over and over again for days and weeks and nothing happens. Finally when she does, what do you say? "Forget it, I am no longer interested," and you sulk for a little while. Grudgingly, you go...and that banana split you have been salivating about still taste as good as before!)
Which brings me to this. When, and if it does happen, in spite of the Arums and Ellerbes of this world; in spite of the "I am no longer interested" attitude; we will "grudgingly still watch it"! Damn the temptation of that banana split! After all, weren't we all disgusted about Bernard Hopkins taking on Jean Pascal, thinking he had no chance in hell. And what about old man Foreman knocking out Michael Moore?
But wait, let us get back to the topic. Isn't this discussion what we really enjoy here?
Look, it brought COBRA back to life! (I got the orchids stored away, Buddy!)

If I got that banana split after being made a few weeks ago it wouldn`t taste as good as it would have freshly made....so would I eat it?...probably but I would have wondered how good it would have been freshly made. So I`ll watch the fight, I won`t pay for it, but I`ll still let it take a back seat to what could have been.

I beg to differ because there is that "element of surprise". All the great matches in boxing have always produced some drama, and some upset.
It's like fishing. You go to the same spot where you often caught a walleye but every time there is jiggle in your line, you still get excited because you keep wondering what is at the end of that line. Maybe it's a bass. Maybe it's a sturgeon. Maybe it's a pickerel. 99% of the time, it's a walleye! Hehehehe! Then, it's a matter of size that excites the true angler.
Hopkins lost to Kovalev. But what if? What if Kovalev fought him when he was 32...not 50? Just the same, the two produced some drama!
The Cobra
01-12-2015, 04:03 PM
Not a question of there being "drama", not a question of being great interest......and whatever isn`t a natural interest will surely be drummed up by both camps to send their fans into a frenzy of "the big fight" finally happening.....but is it(by boxing standards) abig fight? Nope, great fighters are all rated in their prime and clearly neither of these 2 greats are in their prime any longer so this fight will be one for the fans and for more importantly money. It will give absolutely no credence to either of their claim to being the best or who would have won had they fought in their prime. Not sour grapes, fact. The fight if it happens will be interesting but that`s about it, nothing more, it`ll be a show, a spectacle not saying it won`t be a good one...........but it will still go down as 2 aged fighters with diminished skills trying desperately to prove something they can`t.....which one was the best in their heyday. No matter who wins or who loses.......the first word out of the loser`s camp of fans will be ....but "IF" they had fought in their prime my guy would have won....nothing accomplished and neither fighter would have any claim to anything other than he beat another aging fighter.
The Cobra

Wow that looks good.
Yup....used to chow down fresh jumbo shrimp by the bowlful, couldn`t get enough. "Enough" came at 60, first time I got hives but didn`t know what from, second time I had a hard time breathing.........there was no 3rd time LOL. Haven`t been tested for all shellfish cause I`m a meat eater anyway although I love Salmon or perch.
