EDMONTON - Alberta is set to declare a spring hunting season for snow geese this year, a first for the province.
The geese fly as far south as Texas and Mexico during the winter months and return to nest on the Arctic tundra each spring. But an overabundance of the birds is causing problems for the species, says Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development spokesperson Duncan MacDonnell.
"The problem is that their numbers are so high that they're damaging the ecology of their breeding habitat," explained MacDonnell. "By allowing greater hunts here, you're reducing the number that are damaging the nesting areas where they lay their eggs."
