I would like to record OTA programs and possibly Sat. All the big guys seem to have the best PVR s tied up so you need to subscribe to them. Just want to use one like the old VCRs . Any suggestions or help on the would be appreciated. Thanks
BTW I hope I posted in the right area if not please move to correct

There are very few PVR's for OTA recording, one that comes to mind is the one posted below.

Another way is to setup an HTPC* with a couple of terabytes of hard drive, 8 GB of RAM a good video card with an HDMI output, and a OTA tuner, you can also set it up with a sat tuner, this way you can record for as long as your hard drive holds out.
The big reason is that TIVO has the market all sewn up with patents on HD PVR's technology and software, Dish Network got in a big jam with them and had to pay some big fines as they did not get a license from TIVO to use the PVR functions in their VIP receivers. Till these patents run out you won't see many good PVR's till then.
*HTPC= Home Theater Personal Computer.

I've heard that most modern TVs actually have the ability to record to usb but the feature is defeated in the US. I've also heard that it is possible to go into the guts and re-enable the feature. So, if that is true of a TV that you have, you could get OTA with the TV and sat with any of the standard boxes that support usb recording.

An old PC setup to be a PVR is a task to setup and maintain, but once done it is great.
