OTTAWA -- A canal worker plowing snow saved two women who fell through the ice on the Rideau Canal Skateway near Dow's Lake on Sunday.
"It literally happened in seconds, he came over and just jumped in and tried to pull her out of the water for 10-plus minutes," said Alexandra Gunn, a Sun News Network reporter who witnessed the rescue.
"He took it upon himself to spend a lot of time to try and save her," said Gunn, who identified the man as Cory Legue.
She said the one woman had her skate stuck underneath the ice and was waist deep for more than 15 minutes in the metre-wide opening.
"He got his bare hands right in the water and physically lifted her foot out. He went above and beyond."
The National Capital Commission said the pair, both believed to be from out of town, were skating on an uncleared area just before 3:30 p.m.
"We're advising everyone to remain on the area where snow is cleared and where you can see the surface," NCC spokesman Jean Wolff said. "Snow always affects the surface of the ice."
