Garcia's non-title bout approvedBy Dan Rafael ESPN Boxing

Junior welterweight world champion Danny Garcia will engage in his second non-title fight in a row when he takes on titleholder Lamont Peterson on April 11 (NBC) in a fight due to take place at 143 pounds. Garcia also has not made a mandatory defense since September 2013, when he outpointed Lucas Matthysse.

But Garcia requested permission from the WBC to take part in a second non-title bout in a row over the division limit of 140 pounds against Peterson, and he was granted the request.

It is unlikely Garcia will ever fight at 140 again, but the WBC still outlined the situation.

Garcia’s mandatory challenger is Viktor Postol, who several weeks ago agreed to a step-aside deal for which he was paid to wait for the title shot. He is expected to stay busy on the Garcia-Peterson undercard and has no objection to Garcia facing Peterson.

So while the WBC is allowing Garcia-Peterson it also said Garcia is obligated to next defend against Postol (unless he vacates, which seems likely). In addition, the organization said that Matthysse will be the next mandatory challenger and “fight against the then-WBC world champion immediately following the Garcia vs. Postol fight.”

In addition, the WBC said that the sanction fees it will collect for allowing Garcia-Peterson will be donated to a charitable fund that assists boxers in need and is overseen by the Nevada commission.

He's vacating this weight class to fight at a higher class. Don't matter who he fights till he decides to leave.
This one is at 143 catch weight but 147 is his goal, money is abundant there.

Yeah, I know Fib,, but not fair to the public to have a champ that hasn't
defended his title since 2013.. Plus has not looked good in two previous non title
fights.. Cant just take the money and run. Ala Ward. (ala chingada!)

He'll ko Peterson and leaves the title and go after any welterweight available, including Manny Pacquiao.

I wouldn't be too sure Fibs about that.
Lately your boy Garcia has been looking a little Floyd shall I say.
His last few fights were total mismatches and he did not look to good.
Not sure if he would take the risk against Pac-Man or any other top ranked fighter that can give him problems.
He looks to be looking for quick money ala Salka and Peterson for that matter.

I was a big Danny fan,, kinda dropping off now.. a couple of clunkers.. He really got beat
in PR against the Mexican non title bout..
In my opinion he has to get rid of his dad.. Dad too hard on him.. taking his desire away.
At this point he would not do well going up in weight.. people not interested in non title fights.
What purpose do they serve?

I agree, he needs to get it together and look for a contender. He has a good chance in the welterweight division, remember he's a big kid. Young and with a punch, this will give him a chance to ko some. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt and wait for this fight against Peterson.

Barclays Center to host Garcia-Peterson
The April 11 showdown between unified junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia and titleholder Lamont Peterson, which is slated to be a non-title bout (for no apparent reason) at the catch weight of 143 pounds, will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Promoter Lou DiBella, hired by adviser/manager Al Haymon to promote the event, announced the site on Thursday.

"I am thrilled to be promoting this PBC mega event at Barclays Center in my hometown of Brooklyn," DiBella said. "Danny Garcia versus Lamont Peterson, and Andy Lee defending his middleweight title against Peter Quillin are two of the very best bouts that can be made in boxing. On April 11, the fans are going to be the biggest winners and [DiBella Entertainment] is proud to be part of it."

Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) and Peterson (33-2-1, 17 KOs) were supposed to have met in August on Showtime at the Barclays Center, but when Haymon balked at making the match they fought subpar opponents and each rolled to the expected blowout wins in mismatches. The promise that they would fight before the end of 2014 also did not come to fruition.

But now they will headline the second installment of Haymon's "Premier Boxing Champions" series on NBC (8:30 p.m. ET).

"It's an honor to be fighting back in Brooklyn where I've experienced some of the best moments of my career," said Garcia, who will be fighting at the Barclays Center for the fourth time in six fights. "Fans have been asking for this fight for so long and on April 11 I'm planning on giving them the show they've been waiting for. Doing it live on NBC will make it even sweeter."

Said Peterson: "This is an amazing opportunity for me fighting in Brooklyn and on national TV in front of millions of people. I'm going to go out there and give the performance of a lifetime. Danny Garcia better not underestimate me, because my time is now."

In the co-feature, middleweight titlist Andy Lee (34-2, 24 KOs) will make his first defense against Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs). Lee won the vacant title in December, a few months after Quillin vacated the title rather than face mandatory challenger Matt Korobov, whom Lee knocked out to win it.

"I'm looking forward to returning to New York and defending my title against Quillin," said Lee, whose Irish fans figure to be out in force. "I'm at the peak of my powers now. I cannot see myself losing to anyone. I want to be recognized as the best middleweight in the world, and beating Quillin will go some way to proving that."

Quillin, who lives in New York, will be fighting at the Barclays Center for the third time in five fights.

"To be able to fight at home in Brooklyn and win a title on such a big stage is a dream come true," he said. "I'm honored and excited to be a part of something that is great for my career, but also for the sport of boxing as a whole. I know that I'm going to win on April 11, become champion once again, and then I'm going after anyone and everyone at 160 pounds."
