Several of the biggest names in the business have no scheduled fights in place. Over the past few weeks there has been tons of talk and chatter about potential matchups and especially between the never-ending lists of May-Pac ‘news.’
When you consider that Mayweather, Pacquiao, Froch, Khan, Bradley, Cotto, Ward, Marquez, Stevenson and Maidana are all without an opponent lined up, you have to believe that some awesome fights are going to be announced in the coming weeks. It is almost guaranteed that some fights will be made within this list, mainly in and around the welterweight region where there is a lot of talent.

It is not usual to have so many of the pound for pound top 25 without a scheduled date and the news recently is more about who is talking about potential opponents rather than who is actually having fights. Guys like Gennady Golovkin are simply reeling everyone in the division onto a conveyor belt and laying them out one by one in systematic fashion but the on-off nature of many other top boxing stars is leaving the fans a little disgruntled.
The main fight people are looking for is Mayweather vs Pacquiao and any other fight one of those two announce will be a disappointment in the eyes of most fans. A fight like Pac-Khan or May-Cotto 2 that I would normally like to watch pale in comparison to what would be the end of a 7-year saga if the May-Pac fight could finally be agreed upon.
Even though it is unlikely that fight will ever be made we do have some exciting announcements heading our way from the other guys on the list, Froch, who at one point seemed to be considering retirement is likely to fight again. His trainer has said that he believes retirement to be an option, but one that Carl is not likely to take as there is so much money to be made in the future.
Khan is looking for a big name and has said that he would take Cotto, Mayweather or Pacquiao, even if he doesn’t land one of those three legends he will likely get big fight in some form and that could be one to watch depending on what kind of style he is matched up against. You can bet it will not be a heavy puncher.
Timothy Bradley may move up and fight Cotto at a catch weight or he may stay at welterweight and look there for a good fight. After a disappointing 2014 which saw him take his first loss and his first draw on what was an unblemished record at the start of the year. He is now looking to bounce back with a win but has not had a break from top opposition in some time and I doubt he would drop down to B-C level fighters now so any way he goes there will likely be a great fight for him.
Marquez, Stevenson and Maidana were the last names on the list. Each should be looking for an opponent at this time and there are good matchups out there for each. Marquez will be looking to fight Brook in the summer to capture his fifth division world title and become the first Mexican fighter to do it. For now he should look for a tune up/stay busy type fight to keep the 41 year old on his toes. Maidana can really fight anyone in the welterweight division after his profile was raised by the two Mayweather fights. Stevenson is probably in the hardest situation as his reputation has taken a hit in 2014 and the other two best fighters in his division are set to fight each other in Kovalev and Pascal. I am not sure whom he can fight in defending his WBC strap but it has to be someone decent and recognisable to keep his stock from falling any further.

IBF desperate for someone to fight for their title http://www.boxingnews24.com/wp-content/themes/b24/images/PostDateIcon.png February 13th, 2015 |

http://i2.wp.com/www.boxingnews24.com/wp-content/uploads/lemieux13.jpg?resize=420%2C291By Gav Duthie: The IBF have a bit of egg on their face as they frantically continue the search for an opponent to fight for their version of the middleweight title recently stripped from Jermaine Taylor. Cameroonian fighter Hassan N’Dam 31-1 (18) has already been confirmed as one half of the fight but nobody else seems to want to face him.
Felix Sturm had already turned it down before Brit Billy Joe Saunders did the same the other night. Who are the other contenders?

Who Else?
Hassan N’Dam was already due to fight for the title anyway after he bested hard hitting Curtis Stevens in an eliminator over a 12 round Unanimous decision. If the IBF were to simply carry on down their list of rankings the next in line would be David Lemieux followed by former champion Sam Soliman. Sergio Mora could also be in the mix as he was due to fight for the title before Taylor’s arrest.

IBF mistake
To be honest whoever they decide to ask next I can’t see them being snubbed again. It was careless of them to ask Sturm and Saunders in the first place because they clearly had already established other career goals. Felix Sturm had already fought German compatriot Robert Stieglitz to a draw and is chasing another megabucks fight with Armenian born German based champion King Arthur Abraham. Sturm is already a 4-time middleweight champion so was unlikely to become weak at the knees with the offer of another shot. Billy Joe Saunders is slightly more surprising but understandably he has already set his sights on the WBO. If WBO champion Andy Lee is triumphant over Peter Quillin then he can look forward to a big domestic clash and if Quillin wins then that fight would also be worth a lot more than Hassan N’Dam.
Risk v Reward
Unfortunately N’Dam although a talented boxer is not a big enough name in the sport. He has only lost once against Peter Quillin. Despite being knocked down 6 times in the fight the judges scorecards actually weren’t that far apart. N’Dam is dangerous so the likes of Sturm and Saunders likely don’t fancy taking the risk. I would imagine that David Lemieux would fancy a title shot after signing with Golden Boy and exciting in his win over Gabriel Rosado. Sergio Mora has been a boxing footnote since the Contender series even if he was briefly a world champion when he beat Vernon Forrest so he wouldn’t pass up the chance. Soliman has lost 12 fights and his in his 40s now so he would take any chance he can get. Being that he has effectively beaten Sturm twice (one changed to no-contest) he arguably should have been offered the chance before. The reward of being a potential world champion is more important for these guys than the risk of fighting N’Dam.

Lemieux
The IBF must have felt they needed a popular fighter to earn them some decent money and promotion. I think in that case they should ask David Lemieux next. Boxing is getting more and more popular in Canada and he is an exciting prospect with a big punch. Whatever they do though they need to make sure the next guy says yes.

De La Hoya expects Canelo-Kirkland fight to have fireworks on May 2nd or May 9th http://www.boxingnews24.com/wp-content/themes/b24/images/PostDateIcon.png February 13th, 2015 |

http://i2.wp.com/www.boxingnews24.com/wp-content/uploads/canelo888.jpg?resize=408%2C250By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoys is expecting his flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next fight against 31-year-old James Kirkland to be a huge one filled with a lot of slugging a ton of excitement when the two fighters face each other on May 2nd or May 9th at the Aladmodome in San Antonio, Texas.
The date of the Canelo-Kirkland fight still hasn’t been confirmed because De La Hoya is still waiting to see if the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight will get made for May 2nd.

De La Hoya says that Canelo has volunteered to move his Kirkland fight from May 2nd to the 9th on his own out of respect for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, which is the far, far bigger bout than his fight against the ring rusty Kirkland.

In truth, however, Canelo pretty much has no choice but to move his Kirkland fight to another date because the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will be on both HBO and Showtime, so there’s no network for Canelo to fight on if he chooses to fight on May 2nd. Unless Canelo agrees to fight on the undercard of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, he’d be out of luck in being able to fight on that date.
“Fireworks. A great fight [Canelo vs. Kirkland]; action-packed – These are the type of fights we want to see. Kirkland is a beast. He just keeps coming forward,” De La Hoya said via Fighthype.com

You can make an argument that De La Hoya is digging really deep in selecting the out of shape Kirkland for the 24-year-old Canelo to fight instead of looking to match him against someone in shape and someone more relevant in today’s junior middleweight division. Kirkland hasn’t fought since 2013 when he beat Glen Tapia.
Kirkland has not only been out of the ring for a long, long time, but he’s reportedly put on a lot of weight and is close to 200 pounds. While some of the flab will be melted off during the training camp, it’s not likely that Kirkland will be able to take off all the weight in such a short period of time to be ready to fight Canelo at a high level on May 2nd or 9th.

So instead of getting a great fight like De La Hoya is talking about, we could see another horrible fight like the one where Kirkland was knocked out in just one round by the light hitting Nobuhiro Ishida.

Hey Kid I really hope that's not the case.
Too much being put on this stupid fight that should of happened already years ago.
Picked up the new Headstones and really enjoying it,hopefully they will tour.
Would love to see them again(take me back twenty odd years lol).

To many things happening in boxing at this moment. Managers and promoters are in stand by mode to see who offers what and how.
It happens in all business, when new things develop. Elemental Watson, you take a step forward and you may lose money. That's the reason all stopped.

Totally agree with you gents! I do have to admit,, my interest in boxing is waning.
Never thought I would feel that way.. Guess not that many fights going on to keep my interest.
It use to be about the sport.. now its all about MONEY!
I really hope the dreaded fight between Floyd and Manny does NOT happen..
Why fatten these two guys purses even more after the drama they have put the public through.
All we would do is reward them for all their b.s.
In my opinion Aaron Pryor in his prime woulda beaten both these clowns. (say at 145 or so)
