Security experts say a terrorist threat against a Canadian mall should be a wake-up call for Toronto shopping centre operators.
David Hyde, a Toronto-based security expert with David Hyde and Associates, said Sunday that a threat from terrorist group al Shabaab should not be ignored.
The Somalian Islamic-extremist group urged supporters to attack malls in North America, including the West Edmonton Mall, in a video released this weekend.
Hyde said that malls like the Eaton Centre and Yorkdale already have sophisticated security systems and highly-trained personnel. But he cautioned the latest threat underscores the need for heightened vigilance by mall operators and a greater need by government to get the public involved in detecting potential threats.
