By Sean McDaniel: With the dynamite mega fight coming up between unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s) and World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley, tickets could sell very quickly for their May 1st bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The MGM’s seating capacity is only 17,000, which is nothing for a mega fight like this. Those tickets, which go for $150, $300, $600, $1000 and $1250, will likely be scooped up fast by eager boxing fans wanting to see arguably the two best welterweights in the division get it on.

If there was ever a fight that begged to be shown in a huge stadium like the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas, this is the fight. I could easily see the Mayweather-Mosley fight selling more 60,000 tickets if the bout had been put in the huge Cowboy stadium. Although the Mayweather vs. Mosley fight probably doesn’t need it due their huge fame, there will be an HBO Mayweather-Mosley 24/7 series put together for this fight.
That should increase pay-per-view sales dramatically. However, I expect the MGM to sell out of Mayweather-Mosley tickets long before the 24/7 series is finally aired on HBO.
Mayweather, 33, has been considered by many people to be the best fighter in boxing for the past decade. He recently took two years off from boxing when he retired after beating Ricky Hatton in 2007. During Mayweather’s absence, Manny Pacquiao became boxing’s new star. Mayweather is now back, however, to reclaim his number #1 spot.
Even if Mayweather doesn’t ever get a shot against Pacquiao to prove that he’s the best in the sport, Mayweather will still have a good chance to show his ability and make his claim as the number #1 fighter if he can beat Mosley on May 1st. Pacquiao, for his part, is fighting Joshua Clottey on March 13th.
Clottey isn’t nearly as popular as Mosley, and for this reason the Pacquiao-Clottey fight is one in which the interest for the fight is coming almost exclusively from one side from fans of Pacquiao rather than fans wanting to see Clottey and Pacquiao. Manny is the star in this fight and few boxing fans are giving Clottey much of a chance at beating Pacquiao.
