OK kids, here's one for yah.

I have a copy of Windows 7 activated, I want to put in on a PC with XP pro (I love XP as it works with my older software) on it also, I will be doing a dual boot, the problem I'm running into is the fact that XP does not have the VDS.exe* program on it.

I have found a windows 2000 system with VDS on it, but do not have any idea if it will FUBAR the XP OS if I try to load it into the system32 folder and try run it??

Any input from you all will help.

*VDS= Virtual Disk Service.

You need to install Xp first onto a new (either virgin or formatted) hard drive, then install win 7. The win 7 install will create a new partition and also create a boot option on the bios post startup screen.

Remember xp is no longer supported, only xp embedded is getting security updates.

An easier solution is to install a VMware program in win 7 and install xp into the vm.

that's my opinion

Ditto what AE said. Start with a fresh HDD or completely zero out the old drive. Windows creates these install partitions and you can't get rid of them by installing over them and i'm pretty sure windows writes certain things back to this partition about Genuine copies etc. not to mention virus can hid there.

Thanks guys,

Well here is the problem, I have some valuable software* on this machine running XP pro that is old, I tried installing it on the W7 machines I have now, it will not run even in XP emulation mode, I still need to use this software, but also need to use other software that will not install on the XP machine. (W7 and above)

So I need to run the W7 install without wiping out the XP platform, thus the dilemma.

*over 5K to replace it.

well it would be a pain in the butt but you couuls always install win7 to an external drive and when you wanted to run that instead change the boot sequence in the bios

I used to have the slider trays the hardrives would mount in;a plastic tray that slide into a bracket on the pc with the wired connection.Pop one hardrive out and pop another one in.I had 1 hardrive I would just use for online banking,no email no internet.
As soon as I was done I would shut down and replace the drive with the usual one.

First thing I would do is to clone the hard drive that has XP that way if somthing goes wrong you have a backup.
I dont like more than 1 OS on a hard drive, I have mine setup with windows 7 on a 2 TB hard drive & XP on a 1 TB hard drive, at boot up I select the hard drive I want to boot to.
