Thanks to Richard Trionfo and PWInsider.com for the following recap:
Hogan said that, in his opinion, Flair is the greatest wrestler. Hogan said that when you add Hogan to the table you have the smoke and mirrors; but when you add Flair to the mix you complete the package. Hogan mentioned that there are some who don’t consider him to be a ‘legitimate’ wrestler or a technician but Flair covers those areas. Imus asked what Vince would do to counter TNA on Monday night and Hogan mentioned that Vince McMahon will be wrestling John Cena and Hogan mentioned that Cena is their big star. Imus then asked who cares about that match and Hogan said that he didn’t (while laughing a bit). Imus suggested that you would have to watch Hogan over that and Hogan said that the wrestling fans are saying that too. Hogan mentioned that he is 57 but feels like 97. Imus asked Hogan if he talked to Rob Bartlett (the former co-host of Raw from the Manhattan Center days, who is a regular contributor to Imus in the Morning), who does a character called ‘Fake Hulk Hogan’. Hogan said that he was kind of impressed. He said that Rob was doing a good job and then wondered where Rob was his entire career because he could have used Rob for voice overs and other stuff.
Hogan said that the show will be on SpikeTV on Monday nights at 9:00, but suggested that you might want to watch a few minutes early because they might ‘pull some sneaky stuff’. Imus mentioned that this would be the last Thursday show.
Imus asked what happened since the last time he saw Hogan on television and referred to seeing him on Brooke Knows Best while they were in Miami. Imus said that he lost touch with Hogan and Hogan joked that he did too.
Hogan said that Brooke is still beating the music business up. Hogan said that Brooke is doing great but says that it is the toughest choice around. Hogan said that Brooke has been a bit discouraged, but he told her that even the record companies don’t know how to make records because things have changed with iTunes and the internet. He said that he sent some music to P Diddy. He said that she isn’t doing the reality program and she is looking at her options. He mentioned a proposed dating show, but said that isn’t what Brooke does.
Hogan mentioned that after going to Miami, he said that his ex switched gears and fell in love with a ‘very very very young man’. He said that Nick is in L.A. trying to get his life started over. Imus asked what happened with him and Linda. Hogan said that it got to the point where it didn’t work at all and it unraveled. Hogan said that he thought the reality show would make her a star and soothe the itch. Hogan said that Linda moved to L.A. while he was working on American Gladiators, and then he was served with divorce papers on the first day of the show. Hogan said that Linda fell in love with an 18 year old friend of their children. Imus asked if they were still together and Hogan said that they were, and then he was asked about his life and Hogan said that he is with someone now. He said that things are perfect now because he believes in what he can’t see and believes in his faith. Imus plugged the Monday night Impact.
Imus makes reference to a letter that he read earlier in the hour from a wrestling fan who thanked Hogan for destroying his body for his fans during his career and he asked Hogan if he did destroy his body. Hogan said that he has some issues and Imus asked if Hogan used steroids. Hogan said that he did use steroids in the past and mentions that everyone has been re-educated on steroids. Hogan said that he weighs 280 pounds and that is what he weighed in 9th grade. He mentioned that he weighed 320 pounds when he was on steroids. Hogan said that he beat up his body bad. Hogan mentioned his knee and hip replacement surgeries as well as three back surgeries in the last year. Imus asked what effect the steroids had on his health. Hogan said that he doesn’t know of any health effects due to the steroid use because he did not abuse them. He also mentioned that they were legal at the time and he was monitored by doctors. He said that he didn’t go to the gym and buy a bag of unlabeled bottles to try to get to 450 pounds. Hogan said that he used some common sense. He said that the people who used other means had some health problems. Hogan said that he feels great, but there are some times when his legs go numb and he just needs to sit down. Imus called Hogan an American Icon.
Imus then mentioned the letter again and said that it showed the impact that Hogan has on the fans. Hogan said that going on the book tour and seeing the Make-a-Wish kids, it is amazing to see how much the Hulk Hogan character has helped kids over the last three decades. Hogan said that it helped to make him a better person. Hogan said that the character helped him as well. Hogan said that people have told him on a daily business how much he has impacted their lives. Jimmy Hart said that he was touched emotionally by the letter when he heard it.
I have listened to Imus on and off for more than 20 years and I thought this was a very good interview. The letter that Imus referenced was read shortly after the start of the 8:00 am hour and was a very detailed letter that mentioned how much Hogan’s career helped him out and talked about Hogan’s personal problems but how he was able to get through things.
At the start of the 8:00 am hour, Imus read a letter from a wrestling fan to Hulk Hogan. The letter thanked Hogan for making him the man he is today. In the letter he mentioned Hogan being his hero as the reason why he is the man he is today. He talked about how people noticed that when he was watching Hogan, it changed his personality. It was a very positive letter from this fan.
As Imus mentioned, Rob Bartlett does a ‘Fake Hulk Hogan’ character and cut a promo on Imus about 20 minutes before the interview that I thought was pretty good and even had Bartlett comparing Imus’ physical appearance to Fabulous Moolah.
Other people on the show commented about wrestling, including Warner Wolf who talked about meeting Andre the Giant; Jenna Lee who talked about watching wrestling after going to church so it was always God then Hulk Hogan; and Dagen McDowell who talked about the loyalty of fans for sports like NASCAR and wrestling.
Another feature of the show is that for each guest that Imus interviews, he gets a Top 5 Song list. Hogan’s list was:
‘Falling’ by Brooke Hogan
‘You’ll Never Be Like Him’ by Brooke Hogan
‘American Made’ by Jimmy Hart
‘Operator’ by Jim Croce
‘Voodoo Child’ by Jimi Hendrix
Hogan had a sixth song ‘Highway to Hell’ by AC/DC.
They joked that they weren’t going to say anything negative about Brooke’s music since Hogan was going to be in studio.
Imus showed one of the new Hulkamania t-shirt from TNA while talking about Jimmy Hart’s musical career as a part of The Gentrys.
