WELLAND, Ont. — Police are considering the possibility that a serial arsonist is responsible for torching barns and other buildings in West Lincoln and rural east Hamilton.
"Based on location and similarity in the targets being selected, investigators are considering all those facts and evidence and again not ruling out the possibility," Const. Stephen Welton, a spokesman for the Hamilton Police Service, said.
The latest blazes on Easter Sunday include one at a boarded-up farmhouse in Stoney Creek, a barn and a shed in West Lincoln and another barn in Glanbrook.
Police said they believe they are linked to a number of fires in the same area overnight March 14 and 15 at an abandoned house, three barns and a recreational vehicle.
"These recent fires under investigation are targeting vacant structures/vehicles close to the roadway and are being treated as related to one another," Hamilton police said in a news release.
Welton at least 10 fires are under the scope of the current joint-police investigation.
A black pickup truck similar to a Ford or GMC was spotted at one of the crime scenes, while an older white Ford Escape with black bumpers was seen at another.
"Residents should be extremely diligent to ensure that if they observe any suspicious people/vehicles to report this to the police right away," Welton said.
"Do not wait to report it. It's OK to report information you may not believe is important. Let the police respond to it and make the determination. Given the circumstances, please call right away.”
