Former welterweight and junior welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana is in the midst of a long break following two decision losses to Floyd Mayweather in 2014 but is expected back in the ring later this year.
Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs), 31, a big puncher and fan favorite from Argentina, gave Mayweather a very tough fight in their first encounter, losing a majority decision in perhaps Mayweather’s toughest fight last May. Then Maidana dropped a unanimous decision in another competitive fight in September.
Maidana’s return won’t come until the fall, according to manager Sebastian Contursi.
Contursi said Maidana is getting married on Saturday, then plans to attend Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas and won’t look to return to the ring until September or October.
“We mentioned to (Maidana adviser) Al Haymon that Marcos wanted (junior welterweight champion) Danny Garcia for the second half of the year, but that was three months ago,” Contursi told ESPN.com. “After (Lamont) Peterson we don’t think Danny would take it.”
Contursi was referring to Garcia’s April 11 fight in which he barely edged Peterson by majority decision in a 143-pound nontitle bout. Many expect Garcia will make the move to welterweight official with his next fight, one Maidana would like to be there waiting for -- even if it would seem unlikely that Garcia would seek him out.
