Low-key return as injured Pacquiao says retirement 'near'

Few signs of Pacquiao's early-morning arrival were visible at Manila airport, and he was later welcomed by modest crowds as he paraded the capital on the back of a flatbed truck.
It was very different from previous joyous homecomings for the eight-weight world champion and congressman, whose fights bring the Southeast Asian country to a standstill.
A smiling Pacquiao, his right arm supported by a black sling, told reporters he hadn't yet decided on his future after his May 2 defeat by unanimous decision in Las Vegas.
"I will focus first on healing my shoulder. After that, I will announce continuing my career or announcing retirement," Pacquiao said.
"I'm not saying I am going to retire, but it's near. I'm already 36, turning 37 this December."

Pacquiao said it could take six months to recover from the operation on his torn rotator cuff, which he underwent days after what was billed as the "Fight of the Century".
The American called Pacquiao a "sore loser" for blaming the injury for his defeat, and the Filipino is facing a law suit which claims he fraudulently concealed the problem.
Asked about a possible rematch with Mayweather, Pacquiao said: "I (would) like that. I want that. But my focus right now is my shoulder, my work as a congressman and my family."
- 'I won by two points' -
Pacquiao said he had accepted his defeat to Mayweather, but after reviewing the fight on video, he believed he won by a slim margin.

(http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/filipino-boxing-icon-manny-pacquiao-poses-photo-press-photo-053651931--box.html) Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao poses for photo after a press conference, shortly after arriving …
"I reviewed the fight and kept score. I won by two points... But a decision has been made and we have to accept it," he said.
Despite the loss, officials still laid on the motorcade around Manila, where autographed T-shirts and CDs of Pacquiao's songs were flung to waiting fans.
Later, the rags-to-riches "National Fist" was scheduled to pay a courtesy call to President Benigno Aquino.
Asked about his own presidential ambitions, Pacquiao said: "I am considering that. I am thinking about it.
"Our family has no other intention but to help our countrymen. We consider it an obligation."
Pacquiao is not eligible to stand until he reaches the minimum age of 40, ruling him out of the next election in 2016, with 2022 likely to be his first opportunity.
But he said his wife's worries over the enormous cost of higher political office -- both to their bank accounts and to their family -- was making him cautious.
"My wife said it's difficult because we are losing time for our children," Pacquiao said of his wife, Jinkee, with whom he has three sons and two daughters.
"We've also been spending millions out of our own pockets to help the poor. We can't just shoo away people lined up at our door," he said.
Pacquiao is on his second three-year term in the Philippines' House of Representatives, representing his wife's home province of Sarangani in the south.

Its time to retire Manny... you were great! no doubt there. But comes a time when
we all gotta say "adios"... You made tons of money in this last fight. Sit back and enjoy it.
You deserve it.
IF by chance you decide to come back, stay in your own weight class...
I hafta say, I watched the fight closely, I saw no shoulder injury. Announcers did not
pick it up... But then they were pretty much singing Floyd's praises all night.

I hear that there was nothing spectacular happening in boxing while I was away in an isolated exotic island. Nothing on May 2! Some Canelo KO...but really nothing to get excited about.
On whether the PACMAN will soon announce his retirement... I doubt that very much. He is not the kind of guy who will quietly fade into the sunset to enjoy the fortune he has amassed.
He wants to be remembered not for what Flash Elorde accomplished (destroying Harold Gomez twice in the 60's to bring back a world title to the Philippines) but to finish his career quite differently. The Filipinos still remember how Elorde succumbed twice against Carlos Ortiz and ended his career with lacklustre events until his last fight at the age of 46. (He died at age 49.)
My guess is that at the recovery from his recent shoulder surgery, he, Roach, Arum, Team Pacquiao, will all be watching the light-welterweight/welterweight divisions closely from now on and set up a match with a true tough candidate. He would then retire as a winner!
Are you predicting he won't go for another lottery fight?
I don't think so...
think of all the wonderful things he can do with all that dough. ..
think of the people
think of all the children ....
think of all those shoes
Retiring without a rematch and another chance for a lotto payday might be hard to resist
especially if Floyd keeps putting the screws to him

Here is Carlos Ortiz, having a good time with members of my cousin's Salsa Band at a night club own by him back in the Bronx, NY. After retirement he bought El Tropicoro. Great Puerto Rican Champ, I would say one of the best lightweights in history. Welcome back aqua, you have been missed. As rudee said, Pac has done it all, he's got money and health, what else. Stay home and be a Politician, do the best he can for his people.

Great pic Fib... I remember Carlos well... he and Joe Brown the best lightweights ever.
Manny could still do well against most 140-145 guys.. Cept Crawford.
Age is catching up with him.. too many young whipper sncappers around.
NOBODY wants to see another Floyd debacle.. I still picture Manny leaping
up at Floyd and missing him...

Thank you for missing me! It confirms that in spite of some of our strong differing opinions about the sport, its purveyors, celebrities-famous and infamous- and events, that everyone here is a gentleman. I am happy to be in such illustrious company!
No, Fib, I don't think the Filipino people would want to see another Imelda Marcos. (Did you know the story that she was shopping for hundreds of "ODOR EATERS" in her heydays?)
...and I agree with Rudee...no one really wants to see a "rematch". In financial and economic terms, a Pacquiao fight against any other well known opponent could still generate $20-35 million. Beside he really no longer needs a humongous payday. His annual endorsement income is huge.
I'd say, bring on loud mouth Paulie Malignaggi, or Amir Khan for his ultimate farewell fight.
Yes, Condor.....had a fabulous time!

Actually, amigos, I was a guest at a very remote and secluded island as a resource person to speak to a group of young residents who are learning to rid of their addiction and develop skills to return to society to live fruitful lives. There is no commercial access to the island. The place is self sufficient with residents running a bakery, a kitchen, and farming a large rich agricultural land planted with tropical fruit trees and vegetable. They sing, dance, play musical instruments, and pray. And Fib, there is no internet, and no tv. Only top management has access to cell phones. None of the residents are allowed use of cell phones. It is a serene place with a serious mission - to rescue addicts desperate to change their lives.
