Eddie Hearn confirms possible Froch-Golovkin Wembley

In a tantalizing exclusive by Jeff Powell for The Mail it has been revealed how Eddie Hearn, promoter of former WBA and IBF super-middleweight king Carl Froch, is in talks with middleweight terror Gennady Golovkin’s people, with the topic being the possibility of a mega-match to possibly take place at Wembley this year.

Froch, who has not fought since knocking out arch rival George Groves last May (and has been stripped of his IBF and WBA belts as a result of his inactivity) is reportedly “interested” in facing the unbeaten KO artist from Kazakhstan. GGG is so good, and so feared, he is willing to go up to 168-pounds to face Froch in what would be a massive marquee fight; the type of match-up Golovkin craves. Froch is 37 and he has had one eye on retirement for some months now, yet he did say recently how a fight that motivates him will ensure he boxes again before retirement.

Froch, who has an almost unbelievable resume, where he has boxed, back-to-back, so many top names from the super-middleweight division, has never ducked anyone. Still, Hearn says he is well aware how risky a gamble it would be for his fighter against Golovkin.

“I’ve now spoken directly with Carl about this and he is interested,” Hearn told Mail Online on the subject of a possible Froch Vs. Golovkin super-fight. “I only want him to take it if he’s genuinely motivated because it is a high-risk fight. But it would be massive and we can fill Wembley again. Given Carl’s interest, we have already begun negotiations with Golovkin’s people and they are very keen.”

The optimists will give this dream of a fight a decent chance of coming to fruition, while the pessimists will likely shoot it down as having no real chance of happening. However, if the fight did come off, how much credit would old-school warrior Froch deserve for taking the ultimate risk at the very end of his great career? And how much praise would “The Cobra” get if he managed to defeat Golovkin!

Froch certainly feels he has the stuff needed to topple GGG.

“If I fight Golovkin I will back him up, take what he’s got and beat him up,” Froch told The Mail

Froch: No warm-up fight, If I come back it's straight in at the top

Phil D Jay / 24 May 2015

Nottingham's Carl Froch says he will make a formal decision on his future next month as speculation mounts that 'The Cobra' could agree a Wembley finale against middleweight king Gennady Golokvin in the summer.

Froch, 37, hasn't fought since knocking out George Groves in front of 80,000 fans at the national stadium in May 2014 and was rumoured to be seriously looking to hang up his gloves for good.

In the wake of Golovkin's recent win over Willie Monroe, the offer has cropped up to be the hard-hitting Kazakh's first opponent at 168 and Froch will take the next week or so to mull over what could potentially be his swansong contest.

"Early June I'll make an announcement, but a fight with Golokvin is a mouth-watering option. I'll make a decision, see how I feel and then go back in the gym," Froch told Sky Sports.

A three-time world champion, Froch is adamant that he won't be aiming to take an easier option before any touted clash with knockout artist 'GGG,' as if he does decide to fight on it will be against a recognisable name only.

"Fighting after a year out is an issue, but I don't go overweight and I live clean," he pointed out. "I'll get good sparring, get Tony Bellew in and I'm sure I'll be fine for the top level.

"I don't need a warm-up fight. I'll get straight back in at the top level with a serious competitor," Froch added.

Golovkin has the most impressive record in boxing today as the 33 year-old has KO'd 30 of his 33 opponents and boasts an early finish ratio of over 90 percent. Among Golovkin's victims are Froch's fellow countrymen Martin Murray and Matthew Macklin who both failed to go the distance with the WBA and IBO title holder - like many others. I am looking forward to this.i like ggg but this will be a real old school type fight.

if this happens we will see how ggg takes a big shot-they hit a lot harder at 168.i look at this as an even fight.there will definatly be some banging going on.

Totally agree Rokko... Don't know how much weight GGG can put on.. he doesn't really
look that big.. Big advantage is that Froch hasn't fought in a while.. might be rusty.
Huge payday for both gladiators! Would be tough to say no.
