Course Rickles was a riot back then too.

Frank, Dino , Joey and Sam are way before our time. I was a kid in the days, my uncle was a real fan though.
How old are you, rudee.? Sam was half Puerto Rican, the son of Elvira Sanchez.

Correction.....here is the truth about Sammy Davis, Jr. proclaiming his mother to be Puerto Rican: "."During his lifetime, Davis stated that his mother was Puerto Rican and born in San Juan. However, in the 2003 biography In Black and White author, Wil Haygood, writes that Davis's mother was born in New York City to parents of Cuban, Afro-Cuban, and African-American descent, and that Davis claimed he was Puerto Rican because he feared anti-Cuban backlash would hurt his record sales."

...and now you know the rest of the story! :)

All true except he loved being Puerto Rican cause he did. At first I was told that his mom was a Cuban decent borne in PR.
What anti Cuban backlash your talking about, Cugat, Machito, Desi Arnas, Benny More, Chico Ofarrill and Bausa were already in the scene during such time, all Cubans. Margarita Carmen Casino born in Brooklyn NY or Rita Hayworth was a latina also.
Forgot Rita Moreno, West Side Story......

Ha ha ha! I am pretty friggin old Fib! Joey didn't appear with them that much..
He had his tv show going.. Lawford was married to a Kennedy... was the straight man.
The show stoppers were Sammy, Dino and Frank...
I was at a Martin show at the Sands one time and Frank came running down the
aisle... looked like he was gassed... did a duet with Dino and ran back out again..
Martin quipped... "and you guys thought I was the alkie!"
My mom was the one that saw all the great ones more than once... being her husband
was the big gambler.. think she told me she saw Elvis about 4 times and actually got up and
walked out a couple times.. same with the others..
My wife and I would tag along with them to Vegas just to see the shows with them.
Course my favorite was the "Lido de Paris" topless show... beautiful topless women... course i was
a randy young lad back then... tons of fun back then.. not a care in the world! .. then i got old!

What a joy to read of your (and Mom & Dad's) experiences!
Damn...you are getting old, indeed!
You are right about Sammy, Dino, and Frank, (in that order, maybe) as the show stoppers!
I would have included Jerry Lewis in that group (with Dino, of course).
Never had a chance to see any of their shows live...(we were poor- would have costs a lot to get to Vegas)
But I was a consummate Sammy/Frank fan; still am
At one time, I did a lot of (singing) impressions of Sam/Frank/Dino and others
Sammy Davis Jr... has one fabulous singing voice!

Fib..... During those years, the backlash they were referring to has to do with the Cuban Nuclear Missile crisis
when the world was in deep trauma for 13 days - October, 1962, with a US Naval blockade was placed around
the tiny island. Anything Cuban, then, was taboo...including its cigars! :)

By the way, yesterday, CUBA has been removed from the list of "terrorist countries".

Yer right Aqua... as far as pure voice goes,,, I would say Sammy had it over Frank
and Dino... Frank sounded great with the Nelson Riddle orchestra... Dino had a
good club voice... but Sammy could sing in the shower and sound good.
Became Jewish remember? married Mae Britt I believe... looked funny with his little beanie on.
Drank himself to death... Liver pretty much deteriorated.
Dino died alone at the far end of a diner...would sit there every night and order sphagetti and wine.
Was never the same after his son got killed in a plane crash.
Frank had dementia real bad... I remember he forgot the words to his songs on live tv...
I lived 3 hours from Vegas... was there at least once a month...stayed at the Stardust...
Got blown up already.... ahhh,, those were the days...

Altovise Gore was Sammy's last wife (top photo). Sammy died of throat cancer at the age of 64. Altovise died 26 years later at the age of 65 from stroke. (When they married, she was 25 years younger.)

Sammy lived in the years when "inter-racial marriage" was taboo. Yes, he married May Britt (Swedish actress) in 1960 creating controversy (middle photo). Actually, he was in love with Kim Novak, who was also crazy in love with him but the affair was broken up by Harry Cohn, who held Kim's contract with Columbia. It was after he lost an eye in a freak accident in 1957 that Cohn had threatened to have the "mob" render Sammy totally blind if Kim did not break up with Sammy. Right after the confrontation with Cohn, Kim went to Sammy house to find him and Sammy's parents crying. They had no choice but to protect both Kim and Sammy's life and career - and had to call it quits right there. Sad!

His marriage with Britt ended when he admitted to having an affair with Lola Falana! (Below)

The thing that really impressed me about Sammy Davis Jr.
was not only his singing and dancing but was they way he handled
a pair of six shooters dont know how his aim was but he sure put on a good show
with his guns.Another thing was when he appeared on All in the Family this was
absolutely one
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3d4i_21-sammys-visit_fun of the funniest shows that i ever seen

Wow.... Rudee... many thanks for dropping in on me (at that site). Yes, once in a while I get the urge to live those memories of the romantic era (where you can actually hear and understand the lyrics of the song). I have to admit that my "impression" years are much behind me now.

Now you have peaked my interest. With Tony Bennett or Julio Iglesias still doing great at their very senior years, do you think that an old dog like me could still belt them out without "dropping nuts" all over the place? Here is my impersonation of DOMENICO MODUGNO: h..p://wekaraoke.com/index.php?p=music/viewstory/980! (Bet few know of him!)
