Construction was started by the French, then the Americans took over the project in 1904.. Over 22,000 people lost their lives mainly to Malaria.....

Be glad he did or the USA would be footing the Billions spent on widening the whole thing to accommodate the new vessels being used today.

The Chinese are building one in Nicaragua, the canals gonna have some competition soon.
Back in the early 60's they were thinking of making a sea level canal, this was to be done using Nukes, when we went to underground testing we found that if you place the nuke at just the right depth you get a very big hole, and without any radiation leaks, you should see the holes left in the Nevada test site, you could float a half dozen cruse ships in one.
The only reasion it was cancelled was that we found out there was a big earthquake fault running down the Panama coast line, one too many pops and it could have been a nightmare.

That is where the U.S originally wanted to build a Canal in Nicaragua.. They also looked in Mexico in the Tehuantepec Peninsula... But the French had already started the Panama Canal and they took over........Daniel Ortega singed a 40 billion dollar contract with the Chinese with 100 year lease to them.. Oh..Oh....

Seen um. worked at jackass flats for sometime.Some big dam holes.
