New York (AFP) - Daniel Geale is relishing his underdog status ahead of Saturday's middleweight world title showdown with Miguel Cotto -- even down to the champion's demand for a catch weight that won't favor the Aussie challenger.

"I'm going to have to go out there and be very convincing, because I'll have everything up against me," said Geale, a former International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association middleweight world champion.
"But I've been in these positions before so I know what I have to do," he said.
"I've been in large fights where I've had whole crowds against me. These sort of fights get me real excited and I've trained really well," Geale added.
"I'm not coming over here to be an opponent."
Geale's last foray to New York ended with a third-round knockout loss to hard-hitting Gennady Golovkin at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan in July of last year.

(http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/daniel-geale-underdog-match-saturday-against-miguel-cotto-photo-132740886--box.html) Daniel Geale is the underdog in his match this Saturday against Miguel Cotto (AFP Photo/Craig Barrit …

He rebounded with a 12-round decision over Jarrod Fletcher, and brings a record of 31-3, with 16 knockouts to Saturday's bout at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
But to get the marquee bout with Puerto Rican superstar Cotto, Geale agreed to give up three precious pounds from the 160-pound (72.57 kg) limit and meet Cotto at a catch weight of 157 pounds.
That's decidedly in favor of Cotto, who has spent most of his career fighting at 147 and 140 pounds.
And the 34-year-old Cotto, who puts his World Boxing Council middleweight world title on the line, says he's in the best shape of his life after 12 months out of the ring and steady training with a fight at the higher weight limit in view.
"All I did was rest every part of my body. It's healed. I'm fresh, I'm new, and everybody is going to see it this Saturday," he said of the advantage of not fighting since he took the WBC belt with a 10th-round stoppage of Sergio Martinez on June 7 of last year.

(http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/puerto-ricos-miguel-cotto-favourite-saturdays-match-against-photo-132740465--box.html) Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto is the favourite in Saturday's match against Australian Daniel Ge …

He knocked Martinez down four times en route to that win to take his record to 39-4, with 32 wins inside the distance.
"I feel better," Cotto said. "I feel rejuvenated. I feel I can beat anyone in boxing."
Even so, Cotto insisted on the catch weight, and he stressed on Wednesday that he expects Geale, naturally a big middleweight, to make it.
"Catch weights were our main point to make this fight happen," Cotto said. "We had a contract at 157 pounds. That's the weight I expect him at."
When Geale's camp grumbled, Cotto recalled that he made a catch weight of 145 pounds when he fought Manny Pacquiao for the welterweight title in 2009.
He didn't remind anyone that he lost that fight on a 12-round stoppage.
Freddie Roach, who trained Pacquiao for that fight and now also trains Cotto, said by fight time Geale will weigh more in the range of 175 pounds in any case.
"He knows how to read the contract," Roach said of Geale. "If he didn't want it, he could have turned it down."
But Geale didn't want to bypass a chance to seize another world title, and however he struggles to make the catch weight, he believes he has an edge in that Cotto is looking past him toward a money-spinning bout with "Canelo" Alvarez later in the year.

"They're definitely looking past me and looking for big-money fights, which is exciting for me," he said

I do have to admit,,, Geale size worries me... don't know if Miguel can hurt
the big man. Or take his blows...
Miguel has fought at 140 and 147... small man.
Wish him the best....

I think Cotto is asking for trouble if he beats Geale
he will have to face Canelo who will kick his azzz
for big dollars if he loses he will lose the chance at
getting his azz kicked for big dollars. If i were Cotto
i would have jumped at the big dollars. In any event
i dont think Cotto is going to end his career as a winner.

Like some viejas say size matters but little ones can hurt big guys.
Cotto is ready and he'll win this and the next one, sit down and watch.
Both guys are slow and predictable, Cotto will box and counter all night long.
Watch that left hook to the liver.

Cotto looked good like when he took out that last cocky bum.
He gave all the credit to Roach.Cotto still doesnt have a great
defense and can be hit.Canelo is peeking now lots of power a
little smarter but not there yet when it comes to smarter.I dont
think Cotto will get by Canelo. The question is how long before this
fight happens sounds like Cotto wants to take another year off.
Roach sure looked like a happy guy he must be raking in the dough
along with the ego.

Cotto can box, his defensive moves were there, Gueale missed many punches in the first 3 rounds.
Canelo is slow and predictable, Cotto will get a hook to the jaw of Canelo in no time.

I love Miguel.. been a true credit to the game... I would not put too much
credence in Geale though... he is not a gifted fighter... as GGG and now Miguel
have proved... just a big lug..any of the top 10 middleweights would beat him.
That being said, I really have to give credit to Miguel and Roach... they have done
whatever is necessary to revive Miguel's career.. especially after the beating
Trout gave him...
Great boxing skills... beautiful left hook. But still small. Wonder if he spars with Manny.
Same camp... they usually do ...
HOWEVER, I still feel Canelo is too big for Miguel...Canelo is no Geale...Geale is a big bag
of bones.... Canelo is very muscular and probably a legit super middleweight.
Miguel should of said in the post interview..."I will fight the winner of a GGG vs Canelo fight!"
Take some pressure off and give him more time to cherish his newborn career.

Geale fought like a marshmallow but still got a few off it will be different with Canelo`s power.
Cotto took the Geale fight for a easy payday to take care of his family he and Roach see more than we do.
Next year when they take all that time to build this money fight Cotto will go down in the later rounds.

Ok, Trout did beat Cotto. I like to see a rematch to find out what really happened that night.
You all saw Canelo vs PBF, now who looked better against the Champ.
We go back to styles, Canelo is bigger but slower and Cotto will give him hell.
If caught with a left hook, we'll see how good Canelo is.
Cotto has taken many blows, even with Plastic of Paris.Never been out cold.
He can take a punch.

Why bother with the liver when Geale made his head so easy a target........LOL
This was a huge mismatch and a bigger waste of time.

What's your opinion about Kirkland/Canelo? A stand up comedy!! At least Geale fought GGG. True, Cotto looked like Jack the Giant Slayer. Miguel has to fight bigger guys, he'll never make 147 again, so 154 and up will be his target. Canelo will have to meet him there,at 154 in NYC. If he had to go down to 147, his target will be Manny Pacquiao

NOW we are talking Fib! Canelo vs Manny at 147.. great weight for both guys.
Get some revenge on Manny...
That fight would make millions.. especially in NY!
You heard Miguel say on national tv... "I am not a middleweight!!!"
No more Trout.. the fish is a has been.. Canelo trounced him and threw him back in the water.

Yes it would make millions!
No, it will never happen!
1st - they are very good friends.
2nd - They have the same coach.
3rd - No reason for the match!

Yes,,, I did mean Cotto.. sorry... too many Buds..
I agree,,, will never happen... forgot about Freddy...
I would much rather see a Canelo vs GGG matchup than
a Canelo vs Miguel...
Just seems GGG is too good for his own good.. He is a career changer
for most popular fighters.
Though Miguel and Canelo is still a good matchup... Mainly I have noticed
Canelo loses aggressiveness once he gets tagged... lack of heart?
A Miguel left hook might change Canelo's attitude.
