I have been doing some reading tonight ( can't sleep, shoulder pain is killing me ) , and I still find at many sites that ppl are still very nervous about iks and being tracked , and now reading rumors about Vs and their weather forecaster coming out...anyway, If you are one of these ppl then, this forum should be for you! I am running my SonySat 5500 via my wifi setup and it's working great! I would have no problem testing the Vs wf when it comes out, it doesn't get tracked back to me at all :tape:

There is plenty to read and learn here about this great hobby and it does work, and it's a way to eliminate an internet bill ! :yeaah:

I hate to rain on your parade, BUT...It most certainly can get traced. There is S/W available now that can track someone riding on a WiFi signal, to within a few meters of their PC.

Now would DN go sending out vans with antennas and electronic paraphernalia , to catch scofflaws such as yourself, lol? Prolly not, but recognize that nothing is safely hidden when it comes to the internet.

Yeah, I did some more research to back up that statement, and I did find where you can be tracked down , with the right equipment , even with a spoofed MAC addy, but as fifties stated, the likely hood of them spending the money to hunt down a single end user is "nill" ...I still feel safer using wifi as opposed to my own connection , regaurdless....

I'd be more worried about stealing internet than iks
it's a crime that's not taken lightly

for the record, I am connected to a public network, I am not stealing anything :okay:

That's true, but riding on an unsecured signal -as opposed to cracking someone's WEP or WPA encrypted stream- would prolly not be noticed, unless copious volumes of bandwidth were consumed by the usurper.

Using it for something as innocuous as CW's which are tiny packets every 16 or so seconds would be practically invisible...Unless of course the stream being accessed has something like Wireless Watch, which immediately alerts when another connection is detected...

What about the programs you can use to cloak your IP?

I read where one says you can change to a different IP every day.

Are those even worth looking at?

if they want to find you they will...bottom line. with the ip "cloak" as you say, they will still find you. it may take them an extra day but they will still find you. you have to ask yourself, if you think they will go after the end user and decide from there.
