By Peter Wells: Maybe if things were taken back in time I’d be writing about the biggest fight ever between Mayweather and Pacquiao. A fight inspired by money and fame. But instead I’m writing about a fight inspired by two proud nations and legacy. It may not appeal to people who don’t enjoy boxing unless it’s a super fight, but to true fans this is a great fight and a fight that inspires greatness. Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey have both come from nothing to superstars and loved by whole nations.

Manny Pacquiao is already a world wide star on a mission to finalize his legacy, to be one day called one of the greatest of all time. Also he is fighting for a shot against the man who before he retired was in the same position as Pacquiao is now. Floyd Mayweather Jr is the man the whole world wants Pacquiao to take on in the ring. It’s a fight that will define who is the greatest of their era.
Joshua Clottey an unknown fighter to those on the outskirts of boxing, but a super tough champion in the boxing world. Joshua is fighting to send his name across the world, to be rejoiced as the fighter who dethroned the great Manny Pacquiao. He’s a determined challenger with an unstoppable attitude and a defence to match it. Unharmed in the ring, the softly spoken Ghanaian is the toughest fighter to step face to face with Manny Pacquiao. Living in an apartment in New York, Joshua hopes to escape that with his wife and children and give back to the Nation that has never stopped believing in miracles.
We all know what both fighters have done to get here and all the tough training they’ve endured. After watching Road to Dallas, it makes this fight even more inspiring, nothing fancy about these two warriors just a huge heart and an amazing boxing brain. Manny and Joshua know exactly what they need to do in the ring; both can switch tactics in a fight. This is what boxing is about, two fighters fighting for legacy, not money or fame, just to be remembered as an all time great, to be talked about for years and years to come.
The questions are surrounding this fight, like ‘Is Manny able to fight a true tough Welterweight at the 147lbs?’ ‘Can Clottey keep in there with the speed of Pacquiao’s punches?’ ‘Is Pacquiao able to take Clottey’s power punches and not get tired?’ ‘Will Clottey do too much defending again and drop off when he wants to?’
The only people who can answer these questions are Pacquiao and Clottey themselves. Pacquiao will probably start with the jab for round 1, while Clottey counters from his iron guard. Clottey will advance forward slowly as Pacquiao hits and runs. As round 3 approaches Manny will start to fire more shots dominating the slower Clottey. In the 4th Clottey will start to unleash combinations at Pacquiao making a tough fight out of it while Pacquiao trots backwards. Clottey will carry on for a few more rounds, pounding away at Pacquiao’s body and head, catching the Filipino as he lunges from the body to head. Clottey will start to slow Pacquiao with body shots, but Manny won’t give up. Pacquiao will keep firing, and Clottey will fire back in close trench warfare. By the 10th the fight will be pretty close and Clottey will continue to hunt Manny, while Pacquiao constantly throws back. Clottey will catch Manny very regularly by the final round and Pacquiao will fire back in a fantastic ending.
Pacquiao might just sneak a victory for his speed and early workrate, but Clottey will be in with a shout. If Clottey can keep Pacquiao backing up enough he may well get a decision, and cause a huge upset. Although I wouldn’t be extremely surprised if he does.
