Gennady Golovkin has revealed he would drop down to 154 pounds to secure a showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr., a fight he believes is the "biggest" on the planet right now.
Like Mayweather, GGG boasts a formidable unbeaten record. He stands 30-0 after beating Willie Monroe Jr. in May, a bout which took place two weeks after Mayweather toppled Manny Pacquiao by unanimous decision.
Pretty Boy is due to round off his career with a less-than-exciting contest against Andre Berto in September, reported the Washington Post (h/t Gareth A. Davies of the Telegraph). Golovkin is one of many who would love an attempt to end the 48-0 fighter's perfect run, as he told Max Kellerman of Sports Nation (h/t Boxing Scene's Edward Chaykovsky):
Right now this is the biggest fight in the world. He's a great champion. Look at me, I'm not big, I'm not fat. My couple of last fights - I was 158, 159. It's possible for me (to go down to fight him). I would go to 154 just for Floyd. I understand that this is biggest fight in the world. This would show who is who, the best fighter in the world.

Golovkin represents a group of potential opponents who are far more entitled to a challenge against Mayweather than Berto. Britain's Amir Khan has been pining to face the American over the last year, while a rematch against Pacquiao would be a more fitting way for Mayweather to see out his career.
Josh Katzowitz of Forbes believes Mayweather vs. Golovkin is the "pipe dream" and that a potential bout against Berto should be classed as a "major disappointment" if it goes ahead. "For Mayweather to go from Pacquiao to Berto simply seems like a waste of time," he wrote.

For what it's worth, Berto smashed his way toward a 27-0 record before struggling against the elite. Victor Ortiz was the man who ended his unblemished run, before Robert Guerrero and Jesus Soto Karass made it three losses in his last six fights.
Guerrero beat Berto to a pulp, making his eyes swell in a deserved unanimous decision victory. None of these guys would get close to Mayweather.
"The only saving grace for this fight (Mayweather vs. Berto) is that it reportedly could be shown for free on the CBS network. So, at least fans will save $100," noted Katzowitz.

Mayweather's defence is unlike anything else in the sport, but Golovkin is the type of fighter who would go for broke if he receives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity against the best.
The Kazakh's more immediate attention will turn toward Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto, two men who are expected to battle it out for a shot at Golovkin's WBC interim title in November, reported Chaykovsky. He believes the contest is evenly stacked, but Canelo will take the win.
