well....I think it depends......from Canada to US......Canadians need a passport......certain states to Canada could vary......here in NY.....we need what is called an Enhanced Drivers License.......just a deeper proof of citizenship.....;)

If you are a Canadian or US citizen you can cross the border to Canada with a drivers license or a birth certificate very easy, BUT? when you cross back to the US you need a passport unless you have a special D license. They will let you cross but you will need a lot of legitamate papers and have a lot of time on your hand at the US border station.
I know what I am talking about I am a duel citizen and I have a US & canadian passport and i used to live on the border. I use to cross three to four times a day, you need passport or they will harass you.

From The Embassy of the U.S.A. in Ottawa

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requires all citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality to enter or depart the United States from within the Western Hemisphere.

* U.S. citizens: A passport issued by the U.S. Government, a passport card, a valid trusted traveler program card (FAST, NEXUS, or SENTRI), an enhanced driver’s license (EDL), a Military ID with official travel orders, or a U.S. Merchant Mariner Document.

* Canadian citizens: A passport issued by the Government of Canada, a valid trusted traveler program card (FAST, NEXUS, or SENTRI), or enhanced driver’s license (EDL).

U.S. and Canadian children under the age of 16 will be able to present a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. See the CBP website for more information about children traveling with a school or religious group, social organization, or sports team.

in canada, you need a one piece picture id (some have licenses that work) in manitoba, they had boarder crossing cards that will now be replaced by the one piece drivers license. you need a passport to fly but not to cross by land or sea

Everytime I go through customs in Aldagrove I have a problem...if I fly to Yvr... they dont check me as bad. The smaller check points are the worse...whiterock is ok.

in order to get a passport or (edl),make sure u have a clean criminal record, even a (dui) will pervent u from getting them. i even have a full pardon from canada government. but the u.s.a dose not recunize a pardon from canada. so in the end all that $$ u spent on trying to get a passport or (edl)is all 4 nuffin, even with a fullpardon. & im a border city windsor/detroit.
good-luck if u have any criminal record...u will be held & then sent back.
