Ok kids help out this old-time hardware guy.

I have an OpenBox X5 that I'm trying to upgrade the software on, but before I do I need to save my channels/satellite data base.

What I get is "Save Fail" when I try and do this via the "Edit Channels" menu, I have a brand new USB 8 GB drive in the box, I have tried both the front and rear USB ports, I can see the drive in the PVR set menu and when I press the USB key on the front of the remote.

HOW the heck do you do this??? The manual is useless, in this.

Help an old one out, step by step would be a good start if you please.

Try another usb drive, 1 GB or less.
BTW, if it don't work for the DB, it want work to load your key file.

Hummm I don't think I have a USB drive lower then 2 GB, I may have to look around, but why cant I use the one that is recognized as the PVR USB drive??

OK, I found an old 2GB drive and formatted it to FAT32 and 1 GB, did a save of the channel data and it worked, now does that also save the satellite parameters?

And I also downloaded that DB editor tool but it asks to be registered, how do I do that? (no clue at this stuff for software)

Once I get this all straightened out I will try an update and load that patch.

OK got the DB tool working, now it wont find the DB file I just saved, will keep working at it.

OK looks like I'm talking to myself, but here goes.

I got the DB tool configured right, but now I think the DB file (bin file) is too big, it's 801 KB, and the DB tool will not open it, maybe I'm using the wrong tool for this?

I don't use any tool to edit CHs, if you get it wrong you could kill the receiver, what are you trying to edit if you don't mind me asking.
BTW, when I updated my x5 to the 7/31/2015 file it did not delete any of my CHs or sat settings.

OK see I knew you software guys could help, I want to upgrade the software in my OpenBox X5 but don't want to brick it, I think I have saved the channels data base correctly to the USB drive, but if I do the firmware update then the patch will I have to do a factory reset?

And if I do will it wipe out all my satellites? This is where I get stumped.

So I load the 7/31 file to USB and do the update? and it won't affect all my satellite settings, there are a ton of them as I had to split the ones with both "C" and "kU" bands, but I now have all "C" band birds from 177W to 55W, and it was a lot of work.

The DB tool was to look at the channels data base and see whats up with what....I guess??..

I did not do a factory reset and the file works perfect for me, but as long as you have a backup of your DB you should be good to go.

OK I did the update, but now comes the problem, I saved my data base to the USB drive, and also to my PC, now the problem is that it won't let me reload my DB, it keeps coming back as the European DB and not the one I had stored.

I know mine is right as I can look it over somewhat with "Notepad" and I see all my stuff there.

WHAT the heck am I doing wrong????

Do a hard boot with the power switch after you load your DB file.

Nope, it still didn't load my data back in, it keeps the old data base.

Something I'm doing wrong

OK, as a test I found that North American satellite data base file and tried it, it worked, I now have the NA satellite DB, but mine will not load, so something may be wrong with mine....

GRRRRR this is starting off bad.

How many files do you see in the receiver menu before you load the DB file, you should have 2 DB files.

All I have in the USB key is the main firmware and the DB(00000000).bin file from my save to the USB key before I did the upgrade.

Well I don't know what went wrong but I think I would do a factory reset at this point then try to reload your DB file.

OK it looks like I'm stuck with completely manually reloading all my satellites, this is going to be a long day, maybe I might just go to town.

It's funny, it can load the NA data base found here, but not the one I saved before the upgrade mess, I can save the new channel data base (after redoing some satellites) and reload that but not my old one, do you know anyone that can take a look at it and see why?

Also when I looked for the key section in "Access Control" it's not there, the access control menu is completely gone, it skips over where it should be.

Maybe I loaded the wrong firmware for this box???

OK, when I loaded the DB from here (http://www.satfix.to/showthread.php?159516-North-America-Sat-List-for-X50 it loaded up fine, but when it did it asked to save the old DB to the USB key drive, when I try and load my DB it does not say this.

WHATS going on kids??????????????????????

This is why I need to look at the DB files, the DB tool is useless as it does not allow files over a certain size, mine is 801 KB, does anyone have something that I can use, or someone to look at my file and see whats wrong??? I don't want to sit hete for the next few days reloading all my satellites, it was a hard enough job in the first place....

This is why I always hired the best software engineers, let them figure this stuff out.

My head hurts.
