Despite a big win over Miguel Cotto, Saul Alvarez is still seen as a large underdog when it comes to a matchup with Gennady Golovkin. At least by bookmakers. Betting site Bovada is now offering a line on the proposed middleweight matchup between them, and here's the line they came up with:

Golovkin -350
Alvarez +265

Golovkin (34-0, 31 KO), a 33-year-old native of Kazakhstan, and holds a gaggle of 160-pound belts. He fought three times in 2015, stopping Martin Murray, Willie Monroe Jr, and finally David Lemieux by TKO. The bout with Lemieux was his first as the A side of a PPV.

Alvarez (46-1, 32 KO) picked up a decision win over Cotto in the second-biggest boxing event of 2015. Before that, he stopped James Kirkland in a stadium show in Houston in May. He holds three versions of the middleweight title.

The two men will fight other opponents first, according to the WBC, then will square off late in 2016.

This one is going to be eye candy for fight fans
I don't know about the odds but it will be GGG's
toughest opponent to date.

I'm leaning towards GGG but it wont be the type
of clinic he put on vs Lemieux.

It's going to come down to team work, preparation
and plan execution. GGG has shown he knows how
to box but does his team have what it takes to plan
for Alvarez and his group?

Either way ,, I can't wait

De La Hoya: If GGG Fight Was Now, Canelo Gets 90-10 Split

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, explains why a fight with Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin needs the proper time to build up

Golovkin, who has the WBA/IBO/IBF world titles, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo. The WBC allowed both fighters to have voluntary bouts before facing each other in the fall. Most fans would like to see the fight on May 7th, when Canelo is scheduled to return. De La Hoya says if a deal was being negotiated tomorrow, he would request a 90 percent split in favor of his fighter - because his fighter has a proven history to draw against anyone, the ability to sell pay-per-views against anyone, and holds lucrative television and sponsorship agreements.

Golovkin's pay-per-view debut last year against David Lemieux only sold 150,000 homes, while Canelo went against fighters like Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara and sold 400 thousand and 350 thousand, and his most recent fight with Miguel Cotto did over 900,000 homes. Canelo's 2013 defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr. generated the third highest buyrate in boxing with 2.2 million purchases. Because of his selling power Canelo is viewed as the number one draw in the sport (behind the soon to be retired Manny Pacquiao). "If I had my way, if the fight was happening tomorrow, the negotiation would be 90 percent for Canelo and 10 percent for Golovkin, so obviously these negotiations would be complicated [if we did them now], but in time we will sit down and put together this fight, because it's a fight that everyone wants to see, "De La Hoya said to ESPN Deportes. Golovkin is set to return on April 23rd against an opponent yet to be announced.

With Floyd Mayweather appearing to be deeply entrenched in retirement and enjoying himself, the former boxing pound-for-pound king is looking to be just as successful of a promoter as he was a fighter.

As perhaps the best ever to market himself, Mayweather knows what it takes to break records and create a buzz outside of the boxing world. Even if his fights rarely resulted in the fireworks that fans wanted, he always created an atmosphere in which viewers were compelled to tune in.

But now that he’s gone, the sport has been scrambling to find its next big superstar. And as of right now, that star appears to be Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, whom Mayweather defeated in 2013 in one of the biggest PPV fights of all time. Although Canelo is a star, Mayweather isn’t so sure he is being handled correctly by his promoter, who so happens to be former foe and nemesis Oscar De La Hoya.

“Canelo just came off a good, exciting victory against a future Hall of Famer, Miguel Cotto, but they're so fast to try and throw this guy right back in the lion's den with another guy that they say is one of the top fighters in boxing,” Mayweather told FightHype.com. He was speaking about the potential September 2016 showdown between Canelo and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin that looms as the biggest fight that can be made right now. Mayweather knows a thing or two about big fights as his victory over Manny Pacquiao destroyed all records despite not living up to the hype.

Mayweather sees the potential in a Canelo-GGG showdown, but feels that the fight needs more time to simmer before it comes to fruition.

“Why is the promoter rushing and trying to throw Canelo right back in there in another rough and tough fight?” Mayweather said. “If they really care about your health and your well-being, if they really care about you and your family, which they don't, because I know – I've been in this sport forever, so I done seen how it works – but if they really care, me, as a promoter, I'd let that fight build.”

One can argue that Mayweather is correct in his assessment because Mayweather-Pacquiao reached unbelievable levels of hype as it took half a decade to finally materialize. However, sometimes trying to take time to build a fight can result in everything backfiring with a surprising loss. But since it worked out fine for Mayweather, it’s difficult to argue against him.

“It's not about working harder; it's about working smarter,” Mayweather said.

Both hoya and pbf only care about the money boxing is a man`s sport
waiting five years to build a fight reflects that both are bad for boxing.

I kinda disagree with Floyd.. both fighters just came out of big bouts,,, BUT, neither fighter
really got hit by too many punches.. Miguel too light to hurt Canelo and really did not land
many clean punches... I think GGG got hit no more than 5 clean shots in his fight with the Canadian.
I think the Fall would be a great time for Canelo vs GGG...
I would take GGG for sure. Just too much firepower.. plus the fact that Canelo does not
hit hard enough to stop GGG from being aggressive.
Canelo must have outweighed Miguel by 12 or 13 pounds in their bout. Never hurt him.

The thing is that to get big numbers from PPV a gimmick or a edge is needed to create buzz
look at UFC for example ,, the more that little leprechaun pops off !! the higher the audience
the bigger the payday

Given his record, ability and technic,, GGG should command way bigger audience numbers than
what he's been getting ... (he's too quiet and thus dead to an audience)

examples of less interesting people who capitalize on fame through their actions ,,

Miley Cyrus ,, ALL the Kardashians ,, Bruce "screwball" Jenner ,, Kanye West ... etc

The thing is, if your gonna get in the ring and get your head rang, you might as well get paid
the most possible for your effort.

Times have changed where ,, there's a huge event happening and all the Hollywood stars are
there to see it ,, it's a place to see and be seen ,, the lights ,, the glamour ,, the hype ,, the money !!!

oh, and by the way, there's a boxing match happening too

If I were Canelo,, I would want PBF to promote me,, even 30 points from his promotional revenues
would double or triple what he'll make with ODLH

Out with the old ,, and in with the new
