TORONTO — A 69-year-old man has died after his vehicle was struck by a flying truck wheel Wednesday morning on Highway 400 north of Toronto.
Ontario Provincial Police said a southbound truck lost a set of tandem tires from its trailer’s right rear side and they bounced into the northbound lanes, hitting the man’s SUV and causing him to lose control and drive into a ditch.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the impact crushed the hood, shattered the windshield and crumpled half of the roof of the SUV.
The driver was trapped under the buckled metal until freed by paramedics and airlifted to hospital. The OPP confirmed that the unidentified man died in hospital late Wednesday night.
Police said the truck driver did stop, but only after driving about two kilometres along the highway.
Investigators are looking into the truck’s maintenance records for possible clues as to why the wheels came loose.
