Dan Smith, 65, is searched against a police cruiser by an officer at the Gatineau Police Station after refusing to pay a fine and court costs after being found guilty last summer for not having a license for a cat. Thursday January 28, 2016.
Retired senior Dan Smith is no longer a free man.
He was finally jailed Thursday for not having a municipal licence for a cat he says isn’t even his.
But at least it’s only three days, not the 11 days that a municipal court official recently told him.
So he should be out of the Gatineau jail sometime Sunday and “Winnie” the cat, which Smith says is feral and was taken in by his “estranged” wife, Elizabeth, at the Gatineau house he still shares with her, will likely be around when he gets home.
Smith, 65, arrived at the Gatineau police station shortly around 10 a.m. Thursday after being notified that a warrant for his arrest was finally in their hands. “I want to get this over with,” said Smith before leaving for the station. The retired refrigeration technician went to the station last Friday but police wouldn’t take him to jail because they didn’t yet have the warrant.
