The property was found near a church in the French capital's 9th arrondissement, between Pigalle red light district and Opera. Its owner fled south when Nazi Germany invaded France in 1939 and while she continued to pay rent after the war, never returned to live in the property. She died in 2010 at age 91 and left the apartment to her heirs.

I think most empty houses in Detroit have been scavenged fro scrap metal, if not burned down.
