Will Dish Network Buy TiVo?
TVPredictions.com
Washington, D.C. (March 25, 2010) -- TiVo's stock yesterday rose four percent on rumors that Dish Network was preparing to buy the DVR company, according to Barron's.
The deal would be a way for Dish to end its legal battle with TiVo. The courts have ruled that Dish has violated TiVo's DVR patents and the satcaster could be forced to pay $300 million in damages and disable millions of DVRs. (Dish earlier was required to pay approximately $100 million to TiVo in damages.)
Dish hopes to persuade the court that a new DVR software no longer violates TiVo's patent. But legal experts have questioned Dish's chances of overturning the decision.
By buying TiVo, Dish could end the legal battle -- and gain a DVR service that could generate significant revenue in licensing and patent fees over the years.
The deal would give TiVo a well-established partner with more than 14 million subscribers.
