Hi Folks

I am a complete computer idiot so I have a few probably stupid questions and I dont know if bandwidth and speed are the same thing so please go easy on me lol recently I have a couple of family members move in with us and all of a sudden I am having what I think are speed related issues but it might not be that here is a quick run down of what I have and what we use

internet package

Cable
50 mpbs download
4 mbps upload
unlimited usage

Netgear Nighthawk r7000 router

2 dreamlink android boxes ( only run 1 at a time) 1 runs via ethernet cable the other is wifi
1 laptop just for surfing
1 laptop streaming via ethernet cable
1 laptop streaming via wifi
1 laptop either streaming or on skype via wifi

is there a way to limit through the router settings the laptops using wifi and is skype a major pig of the resources

thanks for any insite

I'm only running 20 mbps download and 2 mbps upload for 1 PC and wireless Netflix so I would think you'd be good to go unless you get 2 or 3 streaming devices going at once...just my uneducated opinion...hope this helps burnsy.

http://www.speedtest.net/Use this to test your speed and if it is not close to what you are supposed to have turn things off one at a time and run it again
2 things steaming will be a lot of draw but what you are offered it should not be a problem

I would be checking all the devices for malware as well. Some of that crap can chew up bandwidth and system resources more than any HD stream will

ya I said that too but then someone pulled out a jug and the game was on - that was a long time ago but a lesson I will not forget could have been one of the nights that brought me to the conclusion I should not drink - I am a slow learner lol

Just to add to your streaming. The router you have is dual band so dedicate 1 or both streaming devices on the 5g band. You should notice a change.

The learning part is always fun but it's the lesson learned that sucks!

Ok so I see my router has a 2.4 and 5 GHz but the 5 GHz does not show up when I scan for wireless connections

Your device needs to be 5g/AC compatible. Most if not all streaming boxes aren't. Simply put the devices that are 5g on that band to lighten the load on the 2.4g band.

The make and model is usually on the unit itself either on the lid or keyboard portion. It should also have a sticker on the bottom of it if you turn it upside down stating what the model is.

INTEGRATED COMMUNICATIONS
Lenovo BGN Wireless
Intel 7260 b/g/n Wireless (2x2 BGN)
Bluetooth® 4.0

It is not 5g/AC that is why you don't see it on the 5g band nor can you see your router's 5g band.
