NEW YORK -- The June 25 fight between welterweight world titleholder Keith Thurman and former titlist Shawn Porter finally has a home: Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Promoter Lou DiBella and Barclays Center officials made the announcement on Saturday during the Errol Spence Jr.-Chris Algieri card at the Barclays Center.
Thurman-Porter will headline a CBS-televised doubleheader beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
"Keith Thurman against Shawn Porter is one of the best matchups that can be made in the welterweight division right now," DiBella said. "Fans in attendance at Barclays Center and those watching on CBS will witness a passing of the torch, as the hard-punching world titleholder Thurman and the highly skilled former champion Porter vie to prove who will be the next heir to the throne in the post-[Floyd] Mayweather era of the 147-pound division."
Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs), 27, of Clearwater, Florida, who will be making his third title defense, and Las Vegas-based Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), 28, were originally scheduled to meet March 12 at the Mohegan Sun Casino Resort in Uncasville, Connecticut. The fight was postponed when Thurman suffered minor injuries in a car accident in late February. The fight was quickly rescheduled for June 25, but it still needed a venue because Mohegan Sun's arena was not available on that date.
In the co-feature, Jesus Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs), 29, of Argentina, will defend his secondary featherweight world title for the third time when he faces Los Angeles-based Mexican Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs), 30, a former three-division titleholder.
