Cobra...
I usually don`t bother writing about anything concerning first round play but this time I`m making an exception....for one reason....
If you ever played organized hockey your coach from day 1 tried desperately to instill into you the importance of hustling on every play, every shift in every game. Tonite`s series was won by nothing more than the hustle of Ryan Callahan in the game`s final minutes. So whether you have kids that play or grandkids that play make sure they catch the winning goal in tonite`s game so they can learn a little about what hustling is all about and why coaches keep repeating it`s value.

TAMPA, Fla. - Ben Bishop stopped 34 shots, Alex Killorn scored with less than two minutes remaining and the Tampa Bay Lightning advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 1-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.
Killorn's second winning goal of the series was set up by Ryan Callahan, who retrieved goalie Petr Mrazek's bad pass behind the Detroit net and centred the puck in the crease for Killorn's backhander at 18:17 of the third period.
Tampa Bay eliminated the Red Wings in the first round for the second straight year. Detroit pushed the defending Eastern Conference champions to seven games a year ago, but could only beat them once in five attempts this time, with Killorn, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov picking up the offensive slack for Tampa Bay with star Steven Stamkos injured.
Detroit only scored eight goals in the series, though not because of a lack of opportunities.
The Red Wings finished 1 for 25 on the power play, and their futility was never more evident than Thursday night, when they failed to even get a shot on goal during a 5-on-3 advantage early in the opening period.
The closest they came during that first power-play was Pavel Datsyuk hitting the post. The Lightning were fortunate again late in the period, when Detroit's Danny Dekeyser also hit the post before the puck glanced off Bishop's right arm.
Just as frustrating was an inability to crack Bishop in the second period, when the Tampa Bay goalie rejected Riley Sheahan, Darren Helm and Dylan Larkin on breakaways that could have snapped a scoreless tie.
Bishop sopped 14 shots in the second and 11 more in the third, two in the closing seconds with Detroit on its fourth power play of the night. Mrazek wasn't tested as often but his teammates played a hand in that by limiting the line of Johnson, Kucherov and Killorn to a combined two shots heading into the final period.
Mrazek, who replaced Jimmy Howard after the Red Wings lost the first two games of the series on the road, finished with 23 saves. He won Game 3 in Detroit 2-0 — his third career playoff shutout — all against the Lightning — but contributed to his own demise this time when he went behind the net but failed to clear the puck.
Notes: Bishop has allowed two or fewer goals in 10 of his last 11 playoff starts, dating to last season. ... Detroit has trailed 3-1 in a playoff series 21 times, but only rallied to win twice — in the first round vs. Toronto in 1987 and vs. the Minnesota North Stars in 1992. ... Earlier Thursday, the Red Wings assigned D Xavier Ouellet to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL, which begins a first-round playoff series against the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday night.

If Mrazek hustled as hard to get back INTO the net Callahan's effort would have gone unnoticed.

lets not forget the play of Ben Bishop ,,, when your teams goalie goes 152 saves while giving up only 8 goals
in a 5 game series ,,,,, yeah, you win games !!

Lots of players contributed to winning this series......Bishop shone, Drouin was spectacular working hard every shift. I was merely making an example of Callahan`s winning contribution as a perfect illustration on why coaches try so hard to instill in their players never to quit on a play..........like zayden mentioned Mrazek came out and passed the puck and quit hustling, Callahan didn`t quit hustling and made the winning play because of it.

Why not.....the Toronto media has everyone else coming to Toronto....Stammer, Tavares and the list goes on and on and on. Babs would love a kid like Drouin if he works hard like he has been this series.

yes everyone is coming to Toronto lol, I just read somewhere that Stamkos may end up in Montreal as him and PK are good buddies. Hey Cobra who do you figure the leafs should go after in Free agency??? the list is decent but just wondering what you think maybe a Lucic or Backes some grit to go with the skill, I dont see any or potential 1-2 Defenseman but like you said before those have to be drafted.

With so many draft picks this draft year we`ll know pretty quick in which direction the Leafs value most...aside from the obvious being first draft pick of the top 5.....the next few will be crucial to the Leafs and their development. I`m the same as you in not seeing much in the UFA dept for defensemen worth the money that`s why I`m hoping the Leafs go heavy defensewise with their early picks. Found it interesting that L. Shenn is available......don`t be too shocked if the Leafs give chase because with a better team all round he`s better defensively than anything we got now.
Who needs grit................we just signed the great Nazim Kadri long term LMAO.....don`t get me wrong I loved Looch`s game when he was a Bruin but I question how much of that does he have left to be effective with the changing rules etc....I doubt Lou would spend the money on a question mark.
Forget Ward, forget Campbell etc....too much money for a team that will be admittedly developing for at least a couple years. In 3 years I say yes throw some money at some FAs but not now........but that`s just me.

BTW....I love the Leafs tossing out something to find out if we can pry Provorov away from Philly

lol provorov would be a sweet pick up..... just imagine, hes for sure 1-2 D, ive heard that zaitsev is coming to toronto from the KHL , well according to the rumors lol, but he is a finesse Defenseman not much physical or sand paper but is a pp specialist.

There was talk of Zaitsev last year as well but he stayed home...............if Zaitsev did sign that would be the end for Gardiner and that`s a good deal with me. Philly just may show some interest in Bernier and Gardiner and don`t forget all those picks the Leafs have are pretty good reason to deal with them so Provorov may not be so far out of reach. Rielly could be our #1 paired with a yet to be found stay at homer and the same with Zaitsev on #2 line.........Provorov probably spends the year on the Marlies anyway.

Draft picks are one thing ,, but the leafs unloaded 35M $$ of salary cap
In my opinion they need to go and spend that coin and bring in players
While the drafts are being developed .....

If not they would be cheating the fans if they keep those Marlies players
on for another season

Either they spend that coin or bring the ticket price down, equal to a Marlies
Ticket

If I were a corporate seasons ticket holder, I would be pretty piss ed off

MLSE has been bilking Leafs fans for years....it was only when the Leafs dropped from the #1 money earners that they got another new plan for a "complete rebuild". They`ve(Babs, Shanny etc) already sold many gullible fans on the idea that finishing last for the next couple years is a good thing so there is no pressure for the Leafs to spend a dime unless it`s for their future plans ie a young hot free agent or something young in the trade market. They`ll continue to stink and fans will continue to fill the ACC as long as the media keeps pumping the tires of the guys that pay them....MLSE
