View Full Version : Dead unit?

I have had a Jyazbox (Jynxbox v21) for 3-4 months working great. I do not use the receiver too much (maybe 2-3 times month). I keep it powered off by using power switch on the back of the unit.

Today the box will not turn on. No power lights at all. I removed the JB200 hoping it may boot up but it did not. Still no lights at all and unit not powering up.

Is this a common problem? If so, what is the most common fix? I opened up the receiever but cannot visually see any problem (I am a total amature so I likely do not pocess skills to even visually identify the problem). Should I try buying a replacement power module?

One important thing... When the receiver was opened I had it UNPLUGGED from the wall (obviously!). When I touched something on the power module, there was a "snap" sound and a tiny spark(?). If the power supply wasnt dead before, mabye it is now?

EDIT: ONE MORE QUESTION: Anyone know if I can salvage a useable power supply from an old FTA box? I do have a few FTA box door stops (Viewsat 2000, CNX something, NFusion Phoenix). Are the power supplies in all the fta boxes compatible?

MORE INFO:

I found a thread on another site about using an alternate power supply. ANyone know if this will work with jynxbox v21?

Here is more detailed info about what I want to try:

My Jynxbox/Jyazbox v21 no longer powers on. I get no lights anywhere on the unit. I have tried removing the jb200 but that did not fix.

I found the sticky for "Alternative Power Supply for Jynxbox v2 v3" (this sticky is on another popular fta site, you could google the title and find the post easily)

QUESTION: Will these instructions work for my Jynxbox/Jyaxbox v21? I think my power supply might be dead but I am only a low skilled amature when it comes to electronics testing. I managed to get a reading with my multimeter at 2 different locations on the power supply module. One spot shows power (test point 1) and the other does not (test point 2). Does this mean my power module is dead? I also have a photo of an AC Adapter. Its output is listed at 12v 750ma. Could I use this power supply, and/or what would be the best output rating I should look for? I have a lot of extra ac adapters but this one has closest ma output as shown in sticky thread.

I am pretty sure my power module is dead in my Jynxbox. I do not have the knowledge to repair the power module, but I am sure I can put a new one in my jynxbox if I had one.

I searched (using google) for Jynxbox Power Supply and could only find one ebay listing from a person in Puerto Rico, but the item is no longer available.

Does anyone know where I can buy a power supply board for my Jynxbox v21? Thank you so much in advance for anyone giving me a lead.

You already have a thread on the go for this issue so I merged your new post into it. No need to keep starting a new thread for the same issue.

First of all I don't recommend anyone playing around with power supplys if they don't have sufficient training or at least a good understanding of what is going on. Although I am not employed in the industry, I took a 2 year electrical technology course in college back in the day.

It concerns me that you don't know that test point 1 is 115v AC which can kill you.

The old Jynxboxes usually had a 12v power supply. The new ones with V20 and up (which are probably clones) seem to use a 12v power supply too, although I have never measured this.

The power supply you want to use in the picture is 12v 750mA which is not adequate in my opinion. I have modified a few Jynxboxes for myself and friends and used a 2 amp power supply. A 2 amp will give you enough current for 2 fans and usually handle any diseqc switching issues.

You may have 2 problems, namely a bad power supply and a bad JB 200 module. I would pull the JB and get the power supply working first if it was me.

Again, if you don't know what your doing take it to a technician.

now for the obvious question... did you try plugging it into another outlet? or try plugging a lamp in where you have the jynx to see if the outlet is still powered?

He said he had power at test point 1.

He said he had power at test point 1.

I played with my jynxbox some more today and actually removed the power supply to visually inspect it up close. On the bottom side, I noticed a pin was not fully covered in solder. One of the thingy-things on the power module needed a bit more solder. I put a tiny bit on and it fixed my power supply! Yipee!!!

Good for you and sticking it out! I am glad you were able to fix your problem.

I too have a dead JB power supply. I haven't worked on it yet, but are you telling me it's judt 12 volts of current? I knoe the old boxes had an output of like 5V, 8V, 12V, 18,volt.

you would probably get a better response if you started your own thread for your issue
