View Full Version : windows 10
I purchased a new computer from Dell about 5 months ago
it's an Inspiron i5 which came with windows 10 installed
All was going great until today it decided that it won't boot
I get passed the Windows 10 logo, after which it just goes to
blank screen.
I tried everything I know including running diagnostics (which shows no issues)
turned it on and off several times ,, nothing happens (back to blank screen)
I refreshed the boot log ,, nothing
I called Dell, (who by the way got connected in India) and they inform me, they
will send me a travel drive with software on it that will help me save my files along
with a reinstall of windows 10....
at a cost of $39.95 for the drive and $129.00 (plus tax) for a tech to guide me
through the process .... that's because there is a one year warranty on hardware
but no warranty on software
Before I commit to the robbery ..... does anyone have any ideas??

I would try going to the Dell website and see if they may have online help. Sometimes Dell provides a software recovery on the boot screen that will reinstall the factory software but you will lose your stuff. Also may want to look around in Safe Mode or Google Win 10 Safe Mode. Good luck

Not to be called a racist or anything. But my wife(Can.) worked for a big bank contact centre. She knows how to get a ENGLISH speaking rep if you you don't want the other. It's pretty simple. Sounds bad but simply say. Could I please be connected with a English speaking rep? It's very sad we as a society have been made to feel "wrong" for something we have the right to.
It's about time we stood up and trashed "Political Correctness". Why can't we just be "Correct"

Because you choose OR require an English speaking consultant doesn't make you racist sir. It is your prerogative !

I was in no way calling for a meaning of entitlement. I was offering first hand information for those not aware of options in a situation stated above. I thank you for your reply though it has little relevance to problems listed in this thread.

If you can get it do a Check Disk from a prompt , bootable Flash drive or bootable CD. That would be the first thing to do.
i coughed up the almost $200 to those ripp offs
i just want to save my files ,,,
problem is ,, what if this happens again after another update??

Bro....get yourself another hard disk or ssd.Add it to your puter & put 7/64 pro on it.Back up your valuables to THAT drive.Never be an issue again as long as you're diligent with back- ups.Dual boot is great.
Yeah,, that's exactly what I was thinking .... always something with windows
Other operating systems have and are performing much better ,,

Yep but they fail as well.
I back up to two external drives every 24 hr on my LAN.
Incremental back ups.
Easy to rebuild a computer and start over but a bitch when you loose all your data.
OK , so after I coughed up the 2 bills $$
I come to find out there's nothing wrong with the computer
What happened was, the hdmi cable crapped out, which is why I was getting a blank screen
After messing around with Dell's recovery drive for a while and getting no image on the screen
I though my hard drive had crapped out,, I even opened the computer and removed the battery
in an effort to reset the bios ,, still nothing
Just when I thought I would have to return the computer to Dell for warranty replacement of the
hard drive ,,,, sitting back looking at the screen I thought is it possible it's the hdmi wire
After locating an analog wire in my bag of tricks ,, I swapped it with the hdmi and EUREKA!!!
The damn thing lit up like a christmas tree ..... what an F'en relief !!!!!!!!! LOL
After backing up everything , I swapped the analog with the hdmi and all went black again.
I am back on the analog ,, and will check the hdmi cabe on another unit to make sure it's the cable and not
1) anything in the boot log that disabled hdmi
2) anything in the hard drive that disabled hdmi
3) anything in the monitor that disabled it
Loads of fun

it can also be the HDMI output on the motherboard itself. I had one come in shop here that worked fine except that the HDMI was dead and no cause other than a motherboard failure
Yes,, you're right about the mother board ....
It cold also be microsoft software update that came with a glitch and doesn't recognize hdmi
I need to look at all the options because the computer is still on hardware warranty,,,
The monitor is not a Dell ,, its a Samsung
