Microsoft accused of Windows 10 upgrade 'nasty trick'

Microsoft has faced criticism for changing the pop-up box encouraging Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10.

Clicking the cross in the top-right hand corner of the pop-up box now agrees to a scheduled upgrade rather than rejecting it.

This has caused confusion as clicking the cross typically closes a pop-up notification.

The upgrade could still be cancelled when the scheduled time for it to begin appeared, Microsoft said.

The change occurred because the update is now labelled "recommended" and many people have their PCs configured to accept recommended updates for security reasons.

This means dismissing the box does not dismiss the update.

Brad Chacos, senior editor at the PC World website, described it as a "nasty trick".

"Deploying these dirty tricks only frustrates long-time Windows users who have very valid reasons to stick with operating systems they already know and love," he wrote.

Microsoft said: "With the free Windows 10 upgrade offer ending on 29 July, we want to help people upgrade to the best version of Windows.

"As we shared in October, Windows 10 will be offered as a 'recommended' update for Windows 7 and 8.1 customers whose Windows Update settings are configured to accept 'recommended' updates.

"Customers can choose to accept or decline the Windows 10 upgrade."

Win 10 created to give the feeling of a smartphone and to sell App's from there own store that's why it's free. Would'nt touch Win 10 with a ten foot pole. This OS reports tracking and use to a whole new level.

actually Win10 is not all that bad once you turn off the automatic updates and all the ET phone home stuff

But I like my Win 7 Pro and therefore have turned off my updates program and check it once a week for anything important. I've read that the Win 10 upgrade consumes 10 gigs so anything that big I just uncheck it..this should keep me safe right?

I'd wear a condom to make sure. Seriously, there are two processes running under task manager that i always kill. One of them is GWX.exe which links to downloading Win 10 and the other is GWXUX.exe which is the Win 10 pop-up that tricks you into installing it. Once killed your usually good for a session however when the PC goes to sleep and you come back on line these processes return. I'm still running updates.

Or just run this and get rid of all the W10 update files and nags.

Windows 10 When I Want It.

If you want W10 later you can just run it again and reverse what you did.

I haven't had a W10 nag in months now on my W8 or W7 machines.

I do run W10 though and it not all that bad.

Ok thanks but I saved that file, unzipped it and installed it but I've still got the Win 10 nag in my taskbar...what now my friend?

I have no idea as I ran it a month ago on a friends and it stopped his. Maybe Microshaft countered it with some sort of update lately.

I will see if there is a new one.

So far my two W7 and two W8.1 machines have been good. I just let them update as needed.
