2 things stand out here.....Bettman walked away from all of this with his pockets full of under the table cash and anyone thinking Quebec is getting an NHL team should be committed (but Gary says thanks for the $2 mill just the same)

LAS VEGAS — The NHL is officially rolling the dice on Las Vegas.

Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league's board of governors has accepted an expansion bid from Las Vegas with the new team to begin play in the 2017-18 season.
He said Wednesday's vote was unanimous.
"We think this is a tremendously exciting opportunity, not just for Las Vegas, but for the league," Bettman said. "This expansion comes at a time when our game is more competitive than ever, ownership is stronger than ever, the player base is more talented than ever and the business, and the future opportunities for the business, are greater than ever."
The board also decided to defer Quebec City's bid, despite the city having a brand new arena as part of its application to become the 31st NHL franchise. Bettman said the fluctuation of the Canadian dollar and the league's geographical imbalance — there are currently 16 teams in the Eastern Conference compared to 14 in the West — were factors that worked against Quebec City's bid.
"There is no doubt as to the passion for NHL hockey in Quebec City, there is no doubt as to the suitability of the Videotron Centre as a home arena for a team, and there is no doubt to the ownership credentials ... of Quebecor, which has been an outstanding partner," Bettman said.
Joining the word's top hockey league doesn't come cheap — prospective Las Vegas owner Bill Foley will need to pay a US$500-million expansion fee to the NHL, which hasn't added a team since 2000.
Back then, Minnesota and Columbus paid $80 million each to join the league.
As expected, the team will play in the Western Conference. The NHL said no other changes to the league's alignment will be made.
The Las Vegas franchise will begin to populate its roster with an expansion draft prior to the 2017-18 season. Las Vegas will pick one player form each of the other 30 clubs, and those players must include 14 forwards, nine defencemen and three goaltenders.
"We wanted to ensure that the new team had better access to players than any of its expansion predecessors," Bettman said.
The NHL also said Las Vegas will be given the same odds in the 2017 NHL Draft Lottery as the team finishing with the third-fewest points during the 2016-17 regular season.
The Las Vegas bid said it secured more than 14,000 season-ticket deposits for the new team, which will play in T-Mobile Arena, the sparkling new multipurpose building on the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. The arena, which seats 17,500 for hockey, was built entirely with private money by MGM Resorts International and Anschutz Entertainment Group, the owners of the Los Angeles Kings.
The Las Vegas area had nearly 2.2 million people in the 2010 census, making it the largest population centre in the U.S. without a major pro sports franchise. Public support for Foley's bid was robust, and the NHL noticed the appeal of being the only major sports show in a town that loves a big event.
Vegas is in the middle of the Mojave Desert, but it has grown as a hockey town over the past 20 years since local youngsters like Jason Zucker now with the Minnesota Wild, had to practise on one of the three rinks in town.

The IHL's Las Vegas Thunder attracted large crowds in the 1990s when they played at the Thomas and Mack Center, and the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers took the Thunder's place until 2014 while playing at the Orleans Arena.
Foley hasn't said what he will call his new team, but the bid is run by a company named Black Knight Sports and Entertainment, the same name as his financial services company.

Well the decision was first passed by the board of governors who approved
Then, lately it was passed the the board of executives who also approved
And now back to the board of governors who make it unanimous

This move was in the making a long time ago which is why T-Mobil built a 370
million dollar arena

We knew this was coming and it's no surprise it landed in Vegas ,, let's face it
television rights are richer in the states than they are here in canada and given
the NHL's profit sharing policy,,, there's gold in Vegas !! and the BOG agrees

Even the 7 canadian teams agreed

This vegas thing will be a big bust and there will be empty stands in 3-5 years and this vegas team will be moving sooner than later.
Over-paid, over-pampered, product pitchmen. That is what the NHL, players, and owners have become.
7-8 years and it will be run by the league after it goes bankrupt. Just another Phoenix Coyotes waiting to happen.
The NHL has lost its way, to the detriment of the league, the players, the fans, and all the youth in hockey.
Within my lifetime it will be back to 6 or 12 teams, as this ridiculous tropical and desert expansion plan collapses.
Screw you Bettman......

The thing with Vegas was guarantees by the casinos etc etc that the tickets would be bought up ...like KIDWCKED said "it`s about money". The NHL, Bettman and the owners could care less if anyone was in the stands if the tickets are sold....all they would be missing is their cut in the concession stands and let`s face it the concessions aren`t going to bring in Toronto or Montreal kind of money at the arena.
Bettman more than likely got personal perks etc like the "emperor`s pkg" at Caesars every time he`s in Vegas.....big signing bonuses, big entry fees, sold out seats and guarantees with perks up the wazzoo is right up Bettman`s alley. He cares about the NOW in the NHL not the watering down of talent, not the collapse of financially strapped teams and certainly not the product. Let`s not forget that the little emperor is only an extension of the owners, you know the same ones who cried "we`re broke" till the very second the lockout ended.

This is the truth, its the way he thinks, and will be the demise of the league, has he not seen how boring the game has got in the last few years, the term over coached comes into play, its all about blocking shots, chip of the glass, the highly talented players are not able to use their skills its all about the system, I dunno it just seems like a watered down product now. and its hard to get new fans to watch the games, just the hardcore ones will continue.

Entertainment is about the offense and selling the game to US customers.............Winning is about defense and the game played around it. Defense is less spectacular and doesn`t bring the headlines that offense does......to those not fully understanding the game selling the offensive side would most assuredly be the way to go in the US south.
Selling the game has become more important than the game itself.....money rules, as it usually does and us purists have to rely on our memories of how great the game was.

Right you are my friend, well said. The 70s Habs were a near perfect example of balance on both sides of center......team game and they certainly were a team first individuals second approach.
I still hated them LMAO.

Yes that is true also, do you remember when fox had the rights to the games in the mid 90s and had that puck that glowed so we could see the puck better, and when a slapshot was over a certain speed it would have a vapor trail, I bet the casual fan was like "this is so cool" while the hardcore fans were saying it was the worst thing to happen to hockey lol I kinda liked it because I could actually see the puck lol

And the fans keep paying out!
Funny how we bitch about big business charging too much EG: DN, BV etc and we keep buying tickets and paraphernalia for NHL junk and never complain.
