I have a Gateway NE56R41U laptop that had a cracked screen.

I ordered a new screen and connecting cable (from mother board to back of new screen), the cable was severed in one spot.

When I reassembled the unit with the replacement parts, all I get is a completely white washed screen display!

I can hook up an ext monitor via the VGA port and see everything OK, startup graphics, login, Win 10 screen, go online, play Youtube videos, etc..

It seems as though the ext VGA Monitor screen functions OK (No GPU problems), unless the "VGA out" is different than the "video out" to the attached 15.6" WXGA screen?.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance chris

could be the new screen or cable is faulty, the cable might not be connected quite properly. My guess is if the thing took a shot hard enough to crack the screen and damage that cable then there could also be a problem on the motherboard itself in that area

Triple check the cable from monitor to motherboard. Those type of connectors can be difficult to reseat. It's the flat ribbon style cable I assume?

Was it severed on the screen side or the mother board side?

And how did it get cracked? Was it dropped?

If dropped then there could be some hidden damage at the screen connection on the mother board, if this is where it was severed.

And after looking at the link you supplied, my question is, was that an OEM screen or a generic screen that was listed?

If a generic then it may not be compatible for your laptop, some are not exact replacements.

After you installed did you go to the system hardware and do a "Check for new hardware"? Sometimes there needs to be a new driver installed for the generic screen if this is a generic screen.

It should at least post in bios if it was a driver issue.

Only if it was totally incompatible, but then he would not even get a display, I would contact the supplier, they could have a resolution for this.

And in his second question, there are two different driver circuits for the screens, one for the internal and one for the external, it could be that the internal circuit was damaged when the screen cracked.

I've tried to repair several laptops with cracked screens that were beyond repair due to other damage from a drop.

noof . . . ok will remove the cable and re-seat it . .

terryl . . . don't know as to where it was severed, it is actually my neighbors and his "rocket scientist" son thought he could fix it while drunk. I was told the severed cable arced or sparked! Also don't know how the original screen was broken and if the replacement screen I was given is the correct one! It appears to be but that is not a sure thing . . . I'll do a closeup check of the screen connector on the MB with my new USB microscope!

also terryl . . . don't know if the replacement screen is oem or generic. This was given to me in a box disassembled! If this guy didn't snow plow my driveway EVERY winter I would have said "dig a hole"! BTW it never booted to where i could go to system hardware unless you're talking bios!

noof . . . nope nothing from power on no POST or bios logo nothing but bright white screen!

terryl . . . that's what I'm thinking just because the 2nd (secondary driver circuit)VGA out works, doesn't mean if I get a new screen that everything will be ok if the arced/sparked cable caused the 1st (primary driver) to fail!

thanks for all of the replies guys!

BTW USB Microscopes are really neat . . . you gotta get one! For 19.00 bucks it is worth it.

The fancy software sometimes doesn't work but there is a generic program that does just fine!

I counted the hairs on a flies leg the other night!

Please stop posting live links. I have fixed 2 now. Live links are fine within satfix but live links directed outside the site are not allowed.

Thanks.

Driver chip for the main screen is FUBAR if it arced and sparked....In other words someone let the smoke out of the IC chip. all IC chips and other electronic devices run on smoke, if you let the smoke out of them, they will quit working.

If you want to verify this then take an old CRT monitor and drop a handful of pennies in the back, (or an old TV set) this is the same as putting a fork into a toaster when on.

You will let the smoke out of it and it will quit working, also if your going to try putting a fork in a toaster when on then be sure to use only one hand and be sitting on a wooden chair, or you will let the smoke out of you.

But dont take any thing I say for the next few hours as it is the 4 of July and I have had quite a few.....(I don't drive on the forth)...Happy forth and be safe out there.
