Carl Haas, founder of Newman Haas Racing in the IndyCar Series and former Formula One owner, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimers. He was 86 years old.

In 1983, Haas joined with actor Paul Newman to form the team, which originated in the Championship Auto Racing Teams Series (CART). Mario Andretti won the team's first CART title one year later.

The team would go on to win three more CART championships with Michael Andretti (1991), former F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell (1993) and Cristiano da Matta (2002).

Sebastien Bourdais also won four straight Champ Car World Series titles with Haas' organization from 2004-07.

After U.S. open-wheel merger in 2008 and Newman's death that same year, Newman Haas Racing won its final two races with Graham Rahal in St. Petersburg, along with Justin Wilson's victory in Detroit in 2009.

In Haas' final year of IndyCar competition in 2011, Oriol Servia finished fourth in the standings and James Hinchcliffe earned rookie honors.

Haas also entered race teams in Formula 5000, Can-Am Super Vee and NASCAR.

In a statement on Haas' Automobile Imports' website, it read that "Carl Haas' incredible journey came to a peaceful end on June 29, 2016, at his home that he loved, surrounded by family,"
