Updated Round of 8 Chase grid after Texas
The second and middle race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Round of 8 is history, as Carl Edwards won a rain-delayed and rain-shortened AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway,
Edwards and Martinsville winner Jimmie Johnson are guaranteed to race for a championship in two weeks at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Next week’s race at Phoenix International Raceway will determine which two drivers will square off with Edwards and Johnson for the championship.
Here are the point totals for all eight Chase drivers following the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
1
Jimmie Johnson, 1 win, 4074 points
Thanks to his victory in Martinsville, Johnson came into Texas as the only driver locked into the championship round of the Chase. And although he didn’t win his fifth straight fall Texas race, he’s still in good shape.
2
Joey Logano, 4074
Logano dominated the first half of the race, leading 179 laps. But in the second half of the race, he couldn’t get past first Martin Truex Jr. and then race-winner Carl Edwards. Still, Logano is in a good points position.
3
Kyle Busch, 4074
Contact with a piece of debris punched a hole in Busch’s right-front fascia, which slowed him down in the race. But he rebounded to finish fifth, and second among the four JGR drivers. That puts him on the right side of the cut line
4
Matt Kenseth, 4073
Seventh place was just so-so for Kenseth, the 2003 series champion. He is now a single point behind his teammate, Kyle Busch for the last spot to move him into the final transfer spot for the Chase.
5
Denny Hamlin, 4072
Hamlin came home ninth, which was worst of the four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers and he now finds himself on the wrong side of the cut line with only next week’s race at Phoenix left in this round.
6
Kevin Harvick, 4056
Harvick said he and his Stewart-Haas Racing team never got the handling of the No. 4 Chevrolet quite to their liking, so he will probably have to win at Phoenix to advance. The good news? He’s won eight times at Phoenix, including five of the last six.
7
Carl Edwards, 1 win, 4049
A huge victory for Edwards, who came into the race last in points, but with the victory locked himself into the championship round of the Chase at Homestead-Miami Speedway. So even though he’s listed as seventh in points, he’s guaranteed to be in the final four.
8
Kurt Busch, 4040
Another disappointing result for Busch, who now needs to win at Phoenix to advance to Homestead. But it’s not looking good for him at the moment.
