A WBA purse bid - which was scheduled for Monday afternoon in Panama was averted when the two sides representing Gennady Golovkin and Danny Jacobs came to an agreement that will see the two meet on March 18th at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs) holds the WBA's "super" version of the middleweight crown and Jacobs (32-1, 29KOs) is the "regular" titleholder. "It changed from the December 10th date to then being pushed back to March and we wanted to make sure that we protected our partners with MSG and also HBO, two partners that have been very significant in building Gennady's career to where it is right now. So there was a lot of back-and-forth and working on the details," explained Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions, which handles Golovkin.

This event will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View - a factor that played a key role in getting a Golovkin vs. Jacobs deal done, says Loeffler. "Pay-per-view was discussed in order to reach the guarantee for both sides - then with the incentive of upside for both fighters if it goes over a certain amount of buys. That's how it was structured," said Loeffler, who's relieved that this process did not spill over into a purse bid. Press conferences in early January that will be held in New York and Los Angeles have been scheduled for this promotion. "I'm happy to announce a fight and work on a promotion," said Loeffler on Saturday afternoon after this deal was finalized. "Rather than speculate on what's going to happen with a purse bid on Gennady's next fight." Pre-sale for this event begins on Friday and Loeffler said that tickets are priced from $100-$1000.
